My fashion-savvy friends suggested I give these 5 upgraded basics a try, and now they've become true staples in my wardrobe.
As an editor at Who What Wear, I compile several shopping lists each week (hello!). I take pride in discovering unique pieces that can enhance your wardrobe. While I enjoy offering recommendations, I also seek suggestions as I develop my own wardrobe. Speaking of which, five items I'm currently wearing were recommended by various fashion friends of mine. I'm excited to share these with you for inspiration. The pieces fit into the elevated-basics category because they are versatile (I wear them often and with many different outfits) and effortlessly chic. To give you a hint, one is a blazer celebrated for its ideal cut and comfort. There's also a denim brand that is a repeated favorite among fashion enthusiasts, which I only tried recently. Keep reading for all the details and some shopping inspiration.
**Anine Bing Blazer**
I've been a longtime admirer of Anine Bing for her modern yet timeless silhouettes. While I’ve loved her sweatshirts and shirts, I recently decided to try her blazers after seeing a friend sport a perfectly oversized one, and now I’m hooked. I’ve been wearing two styles: the Quinn, available in various colors and fabrics, with my preferred steel-blue hue that pairs well with everything from trousers to jeans. The Sara style, an excellent oversized choice in cream and black stripes, is another favorite. The fit is flawless, adding an elegant and sophisticated touch to any outfit. Though these blazers are definitely investment pieces, they will remain wardrobe staples for years to come—at least in my closet.
**Agolde and Citizens of Humanity Jeans and Shorts**
I recently expressed my love for Agolde jeans. Every fashion editor on our team wears some style from this brand, so I finally decided to give them a try. The '90s and Fusion styles are in constant circulation in my wardrobe. I also just experimented with Agolde denim shorts and a pair from Citizens of Humanity (my favorite in the drawstring denim trend). Both are stylish and comfortable. I think I’ve worn the drawstring shorts about four times a week over the past few weeks.
**J.Crew Oversize Shirt**
With Olympia Gayot leading design, J.Crew has consistently been a favorite among the fashion crowd, including myself. One colleague shared her fondness for the oversized Étienne shirt, so I snagged one on sale last year in a blue striped version. I was pleased when a sales associate at a designer boutique inquired about the designer of my shirt, and I replied, "Oh, thanks, it's J.Crew." Since then, I've ordered multiple versions (some even monogrammed). My current favorite is a trendy yellow option.
**Banana Republic Cashmere**
Although it’s warm outside right now, I'm still discussing sweaters to inspire your fall wardrobe or for those cooler evenings when a knit is a nice addition around your shoulders. Specifically, I’m referring to Banana Republic sweaters. My colleague Eliza pointed out that the cashmere is incredibly soft and seems to have a much higher price point. Naturally, I tried the sweaters and agree with her assessment. While the cashmere is over $100 (so it’s not the cheapest), the quality really does give it a designer feel, and the sweaters are durable. I wore a black knit all winter, and it held up wonderfully. Like the yellow shirt I mentioned above, I also own a yellow sweater I've been wearing on cooler nights. The short-sleeved knits are also noteworthy.
**Vince Polo**
I’m a huge fan of Vince for their stunning elevated basics that endure over time. The construction and quality are exceptional. Recently, I've been particularly attracted to the polo shirts this season. The preppy vibe is definitely appealing. The knit polo featured above is a cornerstone for easy yet polished looks. They also offer various other polo silhouettes with ribbed designs and stylish button details.
