Breaking News: 7 Shoe Trends That Are Trending and 7 That Are Outdated for Fall 2025
There’s nothing quite like the beginning of a new season to motivate you, whatever that personal meaning might be. While I don't strongly endorse a complete overhaul every three months, I do prefer to start the fall with a fresh perspective (literally), which is why I consistently make it a point to review my closet at the season's start and naturally engage in some purging. First on my list? My shoes. With over 50 pairs starting to overflow from my closet—and having even repurposed a shelving unit to accommodate them—it's safe to say a good decluttering is in order. Consequently, I embarked on an extensive mission to eliminate the styles I no longer need or wear. After numerous discussions at the office, trend research, and my own evaluation, I’ve determined that seven significant fall shoe trends for 2025 will be reaching their conclusion in September. I know, it’s disappointing, but I’m getting ready to say farewell to my platform boots and well-loved sneakers to welcome in some far more stylish and current alternatives.

Out: Platform Boots
Sock boots have shifted from being labeled "outdated"—they were considered so for such a long time that it was almost a given. Yet, like many other items this year, sock boots are making an unexpected resurgence. Designers such as Alberta Ferretti, TWP, and Fforme showcased these formfitting boots on their fall runways, and unlike the older versions we previously knew, today's sock boots offer a much sleeker appearance with flat or minimal heels.

Out: Chunky Sneakers
Welcome to the age of slim sneakers. Once the staple of any chic athleisure ensemble, chunky sneakers have been completely overshadowed by track-and-field runner styles inspired by the 1970s. Arriving in suede and warm earth tones, the standout styles of the season are available at Tory Burch, Dries Van Noten, and ALO.

I don’t set the trends, but this fall belongs to boat shoes. Throughout the year, these preppy flats have been steadily gaining popularity, and with exciting launches like Sperry x Aritzia and luxurious suede varieties flooding the market, it’s a perfect time to embrace boat shoes.

If you've been following our trend updates, it should be no surprise that peep-toe pumps are poised to be one of the most desirable shoe styles this fall. Whether it's Tory Burch’s unique approach or Khaite’s nearly nonexistent slits, the pumps of the moment put a strong emphasis on the toes.

I hate to say it, but metallic shoes are on their way out. Some trends simply shine bright for a shorter duration. This applies to gold and silver heels, which are being replaced by exotic finishes that, frankly, seem much more timeless. Pony hair is being used to craft the most exquisite shoes of the moment, from ballet flats to animal print boots.

There will always be a place for comfort-driven footwear, and currently, that includes modern slippers featuring a hybrid indoor-outdoor aesthetic, which are gradually pushing wooden clogs aside (at least for now).

If moto boots were the must-have style of 2023, I foresee pull-on styles taking center stage in fashion-forward closets in 2025. They resemble riding boots and offer a relaxing, low-key look that I anticipate will be paired with everything from short dresses to slim-fit denim.
