Breaking News: 7 Shoe Styles That Are Trending and 7 That Are Out for Fall 2025
There’s nothing quite like the onset of a new season to motivate yourself into action, whatever that may mean for you. While I'm not a proponent of overhauling everything every three months, I do prefer starting the fall with a fresh start (literally), which is why I always focus on reviewing my closet at the beginning of the season and tend to do a substantial amount of purging. First on my list? My shoes. With over 50 pairs overflowing from my closet, I've even had to repurpose a shelving unit to accommodate them, so it's an understatement to say that I need to do some serious decluttering. That said, I embarked on a major mission to part with the styles I no longer need or wear. After numerous discussions at the office, trend research, and my own evaluation, I've determined that the seven primary shoe trends for fall 2025 will soon be outdated by September. I know, it’s disappointing, but I’m getting ready to bid farewell to my platform boots and well-worn sneakers to make room for several more stylish and contemporary options.

Out: Platform Boots
Sock boots are one trend that was once considered "outdated"—they were regarded as such for so long that it wasn’t even debatable. However, similar to many other items this year, sock boots are making a surprising comeback. Designers like Alberta Ferretti, TWP, and Fforme showcased these formfitting boots on their autumn runways, but unlike the older styles, today's sock boots have a distinctly sleeker appearance with flat or minimal heels.

Out: Chunky Sneakers
Welcome to the age of slim sneakers. Chunky sneakers, which used to be the go-to choice for any trendy athleisure look, have now been completely overshadowed by styles inspired by 1970s track-and-field runners. These sneakers, arriving in suede and warm earthy tones, can be found at designers like Tory Burch, Dries Van Noten, and ALO.

Out: Lug-Sole Loafers
I don’t set the rules, but this fall is all about boat shoes. Throughout the year, these preppy flats have been gaining in popularity, and with exciting launches like Sperry x Aritzia and luxurious suede styles entering the market, there's never been a better moment to embrace boat shoes.

If you’ve been following our trend reports, you won’t be surprised to find that peep-toe pumps are poised to be one of the most coveted shoe styles this fall. Whether they are Tory Burch's eclectic style or Khaite's barely-there slits, these pumps are decidedly toe-focused.

I regret to say that metallic shoes are on their way out, but some trends simply shine bright for a short time. This applies to gold and silver heels, which are being replaced by exotic finishes that feel much more timeless. Pony hair is adorning some of the chicest shoes of the moment, from ballet flats to animal-printed boots.

Out: Wooden Clogs
There will always be a place for a practical, ultra-comfortable pair of shoes. Right now, that trend points towards modern slippers, with their hybrid indoor-outdoor appeal, which are currently pushing wooden clogs to the side (at least for now).

Out: Moto Boots
If moto boots were the must-have trend of 2023, I predict that pull-on styles will take their place in the closets of fashion enthusiasts in 2025. These are reminiscent of riding boots and feature an easy-to-wear, laid-back vibe that I anticipate will be favored with everything from short dresses to tailored denim.
