You may be curious about how the slipper shoe trend transitioned from being a home staple to a designer item. Much like Neil Armstrong's moon landing, the introduction of this footwear style beyond the comfort of our homes was a significant cultural shift. (At least for those who admire the Olsen Twins, enjoy Le Labo Santal 33, and believe orange wine is the only acceptable drink.) Historically, slippers were only meant for warmth in the home, typically paired with nightgowns or cotton pyjamas, reminiscent of an elderly character from a children’s book. (Or stylish loungewear from brands like Sleeper, Olivia Von Halle, Honeydew Intimates, or Kat The Label.) Unless you were making a quick trip to Pilates or were as casual as Adam Sandler or Justin Bieber—celebrities known for their commitment to extreme comfort in their attire—wearing slippers outside was unheard of.

Then the pandemic happened. Loungewear became fashionable, leading to a surge in underwear-as-outerwear items such as slip dresses, lace-trimmed satin shorts, and babydoll dresses taking center stage. The slipper shoe trend, while not as intimate, has definitely experienced a revival.

What is the Slipper Shoe Trend? The slipper shoe trend signifies the transformation of this casual indoor style into something chic, desirable, and suitable for city life. Anna McLaren, the Australian designer and founder of A.Emery, explains that this trend reflects our evolving values, particularly a newfound emphasis on comfort. According to her, the notion of ease is "no longer restricted to home time." She notes, "There’s an increasing appetite for items that feel both effortless and luxurious, which has translated into shoes that are simple, intentional, and comfortable for all-day wear." This is vividly illustrated in The Row’s spring/summer 2024 collection. After Mary-Kate Olsen was spotted in Los Angeles braving the chill in black leather slippers paired with a grey tracksuit and a trench coat, she and her sister showcased a more luxurious reinterpretation of hotel slippers as a coveted item. The implication was clear: when luxury is within reach, what's more indulgent than slipping into cozy slippers?

(Image credit: The Row) McLaren supports this viewpoint. "People's dressing habits now have a softness to them; there's a trend towards relaxed, uncomplicated silhouettes and items that feel grounded and personal. The slipper trend aligns with this craving for simplicity." Following The Row’s endorsement, a stream of celebrities embraced the style; for instance, Jennifer Lawrence was spotted in suede slippers while in Manhattan, and Kendall Jenner appeared at a New York hotel ahead of the 2025 Met Gala in a pair costing £960. Other designers joined in, including a patent style showcased on Miu Miu’s autumn/winter 2024 runway.

Why are Slipper Shoes In Style? But why is this happening now, five years after at-home fashion became commonplace? "People are in search of wardrobe essentials that feel authentic, prioritizing comfort without compromising design integrity," McLaren explains, reflecting on why slippers are gaining traction among sophisticated minimalists. "[The slipper shoe trend] is understated," she adds. "There's no excess or embellishment; it embodies restraint. The slipper silhouette mirrors a broader tendency towards timeless and subtle design elements that fit well within a more refined, streamlined aesthetic. A flat shoe, especially one crafted with thoughtful proportions and high-quality materials, can be just as elegant as a heel; it all depends on craftsmanship, styling, and how it integrates into a modern, intelligent wardrobe." On that note, I recently discovered a stunning slipper at a Zara Home store in Athens—ivory satin with faux fur trim that beckoned for coziness. Turns out, prioritizing relaxation is indeed the ultimate luxury.
