Forget flip-flops—this emerging comfortable shoe trend could also be the most stylish of 2025.
You may be curious about how the slipper shoe trend progressed from being a home footwear option to a fashionable designer item. Much like Neil Armstrong's moon landing, the transition of this shoe style from our cozy homes to the streets felt like a small step for some, but a significant leap for many. (At least those who revere the Olsen Twins, enjoy Le Labo Santal 33, and believe orange wine is the only drink worth having). Traditionally, slippers were meant solely for keeping feet warm indoors and were generally paired with nightgowns and cotton pajamas, reminiscent of a character from a whimsical children’s book. (Or stylish loungewear from brands like Sleeper, Olivia Von Halle, Honeydew Intimates, or Kat The Label.) Unless you had a last-minute Pilates class to attend or embodied the casual style of Adam Sandler or Justin Bieber—two celebrities known for their commitment to a The Big Lebowski-like casual aesthetic—it was unthinkable to venture outside in slippers. Then the pandemic struck. Loungewear became acceptable in public, leading to a surge of underwear-as-outerwear items, including slip dresses, lace-trimmed satin shorts, and babydoll dresses. The slipper shoe trend is not as intimate as these examples, but there is definitely something noteworthy about the revival of this previously overlooked closed-toe mule.
**What is the Slipper Shoe Trend?**
The slipper shoe trend signifies how this casual indoor style has been transformed into something chic, desirable, and, most importantly, appropriate for city life. According to Anna McLaren, the Australian designer and founder of the independent fashion brand A.Emery, the trend indicates a shift in our values towards comfort. She notes that this notion of ease is "no longer solely for home time." "There's an increasing demand for items that blend effortless style with luxury, and that has influenced footwear to be more minimalist, intentional, and comfortable enough for all-day wear." This is exemplified in The Row’s spring/summer 2024 collection. After Mary-Kate Olsen was seen in Los Angeles braving the chill in black leather slippers, a grey tracksuit, a trench, and a navy scarf, she and her sister introduced a more luxurious interpretation of the style by reimagining hotel slippers into a desired item. The message was clear: when one can indulge in various luxury items, what's more self-indulgent than slipping into something as cozy as a slipper?
McLaren resonates with this idea. "There’s a gentleness in current fashion; a preference for calm, uncomplicated silhouettes and pieces that feel personal and grounded. The slipper trend embodies this longing for simplicity." Following The Row’s endorsement, numerous celebrities were spotted in slippers; Jennifer Lawrence wore suede slippers while out in Manhattan, and Kendall Jenner arrived at a New York hotel before the 2025 Met Gala in a pair worth £960. Other designers took notice too, including a patent version showcased on Miu Miu’s autumn/winter 2024 runway.
**Why are Slipper Shoes In Style?**
But why now, five years after the rise of home-centric fashion? "People are seeking wardrobe essentials that avoid being performative, that emphasize ease without compromising on design quality," McLaren explains regarding the swift acceptance of slippers among refined minimalists. "[The slipper shoe trend] is understated," she adds. "There's no extravagance, no embellishment—it's all about restraint. The slipper silhouette reflects a wider trend toward timelessness and subtle design principles that fit seamlessly into a more polished and simplified aesthetic. A flat shoe, especially one with careful proportions and high-quality materials, can be just as elegant as a heel; it’s about craftsmanship, styling, and its alignment with a modern, thoughtful wardrobe." On that note, I feel encouraged to embrace the flat. Earlier this month, I discovered a beautiful slipper during a visit to a Zara Home store in Athens. With its ivory satin and faux fur trim, it was like a beckoning to prioritize comfort. It seems that relaxation is truly the ultimate luxury.
