I visited Copenhagen—Here are 8 ways women are styling their sweaters more fashionably than in New York.
(Image credit: The Style Stalker) When I prepared for Copenhagen Fashion Week in early August, I expected different weather conditions. I imagined strolling to the shows in flip-flops, a footwear choice so favored in the Scandi city that it could be considered its emblem. I thought I might layer a bikini beneath my slip skirts and crop tops, ready to leap off the dock at the famous La Banchina. I intended to wear only open-toed shoes and slingbacks to maximize their use before needing to start layering with socks for the fall.
The thing about Copenhagen is that you can't count on the sun; it’s too unpredictable. To be fair, this unpredictability may be part of what makes Scandi girl style so appealing. Everyone in Copenhagen has to be prepared for anything. They dress with a blend of ease and practicality. They can’t get overly attached to an outfit they conceptualized, which helps them maintain an effortless appearance. If they put in too much effort, they might face disappointment.
I learned this lesson when the weather forecast for the week changed to cloudy with a high likelihood of scattered rain. On the morning of my flight, I packed a completely different wardrobe. During my stay, the sun only made brief appearances. I found myself relying on rain boots and light jackets, and I only used a bag large enough to carry my umbrella. However, it wasn't all negative. The street style ended up being much more exciting as a result. Additionally, it was refreshing to start considering my fall wardrobe and observe how Danish women managed to pull it all together. One thing I quickly noticed was their unique approach to wearing sweaters. With temperatures fluctuating throughout the day, they often styled their sweaters in various ways. Below are eight ways they showcased their sweaters that made me appreciate that the original forecast didn’t hold, allowing me to gather useful styling ideas for October.
