Apologies to my creams and balms—Disco Blush is what I'll be sporting for the time being.

Apologies to my creams and balms—Disco Blush is what I'll be sporting for the time being.

As much as I enjoy a sparkling eyeshadow look, I usually avoid shimmer in my blushes and bronzers. You see, unless you have the sweat glands of an alien, it’s unlikely your cheekbones naturally shine when they reflect light. Non-shimmery pigments (like a sheer cream blush) generally create a far more believable everyday flush, as if I just finished an invigorating jog. But leave it to Carolina Gonzalez to inspire me to explore the world of glitz and glamour! The renowned makeup artist has recently shown me how to rock "disco blush," and I’ve been opting for it over my usual creams and balms ever since, whether I’m in office attire or dressed up for a special occasion. What can I say? A bit of sparkle really adds to the vibe.

Disco blush (a term introduced by my fellow beauty editor Alyssa Brascia) essentially means a luminous, shimmery blush—anything that causes your cheekbones to shimmer. Simply mix your regular blush with a pearly or golden highlighter, and you’ll look like a spinning disco ball in no time. You don’t need to go overboard with the sparkle; just a hint will make you glow beautifully. Take note from Gonzalez, who combined Armani Beauty's Acqua Highlighter in Dawn with the Cheek Tint in Rosy Peach to create a custom sparkly disco-inspired shade for me last July. This technique works best if you have two liquid or cream formulas that blend easily, but if you don’t want to mix, you could also look for a blush-highlighter hybrid that provides a vibrant flush while illuminating the high points of your face. These intensely pigmented shimmers are increasingly popular, and they can also be applied to your eyelids and lips (or collarbones, if you're feeling bold). As celebrity makeup artist Buster Knight mentioned to WWW, “[They] are currently more stylish than using a separate highlighter.” Plus, you can find them in nearly any makeup format: cream, liquid, powder, etc.

How do you apply disco blush? It’s a valid question, considering "disco blush" fits into both the blush and highlighter categories. Do you apply it to the apples of your cheeks, like blush? Or do you sweep it toward your temples, like highlighter? Personally, I lean toward the latter, particularly if you want a sculpted appearance (makeup artists often blend blush upward to create a lifting effect). If you can't imagine leaving the apples of your cheeks bare, you can add a bit of color there for a fresh flush; just concentrate more product on the higher points of your cheekbones afterward. You might also consider using a blush topper—such as Patrick Ta Major Glow Crème & Powder Light Reflecting Highlighter in the shade Baby—if you’re aiming for an extra pearly look. Layer it on top of your blush of choice, and the pink shimmer will enhance any rosy tone beautifully.

While matte, soft-focus looks typically dominate as the weather cools, stay tuned: I anticipate a surge of shimmery blush styles this fall. This year's autumn color palette seems bolder than in previous years (goodbye minimalism!), making it understandable that beauty insiders would desire cheekbones that sparkle like a disco ball. Keep scrolling to shop the disco blushes I’ll be sporting in the near future—some liquids, some powders, all featuring eye-catching sparkle.

      **Armani Beauty**

      Cheek Tint Shine

Gonzalez blended blush and highlighter to create my disco-inspired shade, but Armani offers radiant-finish tints that serve the same purpose. Combine this shimmering peach with even more highlighter if you like.

      **PATRICK TA**

Major Glow Creme & Powder Light Reflecting Translucent Highlighter Duo

This is the previously mentioned Patrick Ta blush topper. Just look at that sparkle!

**Saie** joined the disco blush trend years back with its beautiful Glow Sculpt "highlighting blush." I love this warm, peachy shade all year round.

      **Made By Mitchell**

      Blursh Pod Domed Blusher

This coral shade is incredibly light, buildable, and outrageously luminous.

      **Westman Atelier**

      Super Loaded Tinted Cream Highlighter

Technically a highlighter, this buildable cream contains a hint of rosy pigment that shines on its own (or can serve as a great blush topper).

      **CHANEL**

Jardin Imaginaire Blush and Highlighter Duo

This Chanel compact is so beautiful that I *almost* hesitate to use it. Swirl a fluffy brush over both shades for a stunning, shimmery finish.

      **Charlotte Tilbury**

Mini Hollywood Blush & Glow Palette

With a silky formula, rich color payoff, and an adorably compact size, what more could you ask for?
