As a Fashion Editor, here are 6 Fall Jacket Trends I'm Embracing for 2025 and 6 I'm Passing On.
I understand—the summer is still ongoing, but as someone passionate about outerwear, I can't contain my excitement any longer to discuss which jacket trends will be popular this fall and which ones won't. I shared my predictions back in March when the fall/winter 2025 collections were revealed in cities like New York, Milan, London, and Paris. Now that fall is approaching, it’s clearer which styles will truly prevail. Based on the fashion trends observed during Copenhagen's recent fashion week, where individuals showcased their new-season jackets; the way New Yorkers are layering lightweight pieces over black activewear and jeans prematurely; and the influencers on Instagram and TikTok flaunting their fall purchases, I've identified the top six fall jacket trends to embrace and six to avoid. As a preview, funnel-neck leather bomber jackets are set to replace leather moto jackets. Continue reading to discover everything you need about stylish outerwear for fall 2025.
**Skip: Moto Jackets**
**Buy: Leather Funnel-Neck Bomber Jackets**
When discussing leather jackets for fall, there are many styles to admire, but leading the pack is the funnel-neck leather bomber jacket. This silhouette is sleek yet has just the right amount of slouch. It adds an edge to tailored trousers and can elevate a simple outfit of jeans, loafers, and a white tee.
**Shop the trend:**
- ZARA: Faux Leather Cropped Jacket
- MANGO: Perkins Collar Texture Jacket
- Helsa: The Oversized Leather Bomber
- Magda Butrym: Oversized Leather Bomber Jacket
**Skip: Embroidered Jackets**
**Buy: Fringe Jackets**
Fringe jackets are quickly becoming a favorite for those looking to appear stylish with little effort. I'm seeing everything from boxy leather styles to oversized suede options. Some of my favorites have been vintage finds, but if you can't score an original, check out offerings from Madewell and Re/Done. For styling, take cues from fashion enthusiasts in NYC pairing them with straight-leg jeans and flip-flops, rather than opting for bootcut jeans and cowboy boots, which can give the jacket a costumey vibe.
**Shop the trend:**
- BLANKNYC: Faux Suede Fringe Jacket
- Madewell: Fringe Shirt-Jacket in Suede
- Guest In Residence: Western Fringe Jacket
- RE/DONE: Suede Fringe Jacket
**Skip: Cropped Denim Jackets**
**Buy: Technical Jackets**
In August 2024, senior fashion editor Eliza Huber highlighted the sporty-jacket trend after spotting it in collections by The Row, Tory Burch, and Proenza Schouler for spring/summer 2024. Now, over a year later, this trend has spread widely—seen in London, Paris, L.A., and in new lines from Toteme, Massimo Dutti, Zara, and Uniqlo. For those who are unfamiliar, sporty jackets are typically made from technical fabrics and come in an anorak or zip-up design. They are being styled more formally with silk pants, tailored trousers, and maxi skirts for an unexpectedly chic appearance.
**Shop the trend:**
- Uniqlo: UV Protection Pocketable Parka
- Massimo Dutti: Technical Fabric Sweatshirt With Zip Detail
- TOTEME: Organic Cotton-Blend Jacket
- Zw Collection: Pocket Puffer Jacket
**Skip: Cape Coats**
**Buy: Ponchos**
Previously, if you had mentioned that ponchos would make a comeback in 2025, I would have had difficulty believing it. However, after seeing the sleeveless piece in Proenza Schouler's F/W 25 collection and recently on Bella Hadid, I've definitely come around. In fact, I’m fully on board and need a poncho in my wardrobe ASAP. Its soft, unstructured shape provides an effortless drape over the body, adding a touch of sophistication. I'm looking at brands like COS and J.Crew for laid-back options and The Row and Scanlan Theodore for more elegant, artisanal styles.
**Shop the trend:**
- J.Crew: Cashmere-Wool Blend Poncho
- Scanlan Theodore: Brushed Fringed Poncho
- COS: Double-Faced Wool Scarf Poncho
- The Row: Cedar Top in Silk and Viscose
**Skip: Fur Jackets**
**Buy: Faux-Fur Jackets**
Fur outerwear made quite an appearance on the fall/winter 2025 runways. While I wasn't entirely sure which collections featured real fur (As brands like Gucci, Versace, Stella McCartney, and Michael Kors are committed to ethical alternatives), our support at Who What Wear goes to faux fur only. It’s 2025, and with so many sustainable choices available, there’s no need to sport real fur. Faux-fur jackets offer the same
