Bid farewell to sleek bobs this fall—these 8 styles are set to take their place.
As the seasons shift, there's a truth known to all beauty lovers: while many hairstyles may be favored, they will ultimately fade in popularity. We don't mean to suggest that certain styles will never return (or that you should avoid them), but if you want to stay ahead of what the most fashionable and beauty-conscious individuals will be rocking in fall 2025, it’s wise to be aware of the hairstyles that are likely to fade from the runways, red carpets, and trendy urban areas, as well as those that will come to replace them. Fall is the ideal time for a fresh start and experimenting with new looks that can carry you stylishly into the new year. This means you'll not only have insight into which trends will be out this fall, but you'll also find inspiration for your next salon visit.
To kick things off, we consulted hairstylists TerraRose Puncerelli and Sean Michael regarding their predictions for the cuts, colors, and styles that will trend in fall 2025. Read on to discover which hair trends are set to be "out" and "in," along with the best products to refresh your hair just before the holiday season.
Soft, Fluid Layers vs. High Maintenance
In recent months, the late-'90s/Y2K revival has swept through the beauty scene, dominating social media feeds and Pinterest boards. Love it or loathe it, this trend is likely to become more visible as the weather cools. "Clients this year are steering away from looks that are overly polished or high maintenance," says Michael. "Instead, we’re leaning towards softer, more fluid layers influenced by the ’90s and early 2000s—think feathered blowouts, mid-length shags, and playful curtain bangs." These styles are gentle, adaptable, and pair perfectly with cozy sweaters and chunky boots.
Cowgirl Fringe Bob vs. Choppy, Asymmetrical Bob
The verdict is in: the edgy, textured bobs from last year will not make a comeback this fall. While this might not come as a total shock, their more luxurious yet effortless replacements have been apparent since they appeared on the runways last fall. "The choppy asymmetrical bob with heavy layers is fading out, being replaced by a playful cowgirl fringe bob. There’s a noticeable trend where women want their hairstyles to look more effortless and natural," Puncerelli explains. Essentially, it’s time to set aside the hair shears and opt for finishing sprays.
Toasty Tones vs. Icy Extremes
Curious about the hair colors that fashion-forward individuals will be rushing to salons for? Last year was all about butter blonde and cowboy copper, but this fall we will embrace warm tones reminiscent of autumn leaves. "On the color front, warmer, more dimensional shades will outshine icy tones: golden blondes, warm beige brunettes, and copper-hued reds," Michael notes. "These colors appear cozier, softer, and more practical, especially for fall and winter." When spring arrives, you can always lighten the same shades for a smooth transition.
Lived-In and Sun-Kissed vs. Ombré Shades
While some areas may see fewer sunny days as fall approaches, it’s an excellent opportunity to introduce warmth with lived-in and sun-kissed styles. "One trend that is almost finished is the ombre hair color, which is being replaced by more natural, sun-kissed strands and a grown-out, lived-in appearance," Puncerelli predicts. In recent years, celebrities like Hailey Bieber and EmRata have showcased gorgeous hair colors that fit this style, providing plenty of inspiration to look forward to this season.
Polished and Luxe vs. Undone Tresses
Although hair experts predict a reduction in high-maintenance styles, that doesn’t mean polished looks are off the table for their stylish clients. In fact, we expect to see even more luxe bobs, bouncy lobs, and glossy, long lengths as fall transitions into winter. "As we enter winter, I foresee styles getting a bit more polished and luxurious. The volume and layers will remain, but they'll feature more refinement—shiny finishes, sleeker blowouts, and structured styles that feel ready for the holidays," Michael shares. If you want to infuse your polished look with a touch of uniqueness, consider adding a fun hair accessory.
Rooty Coloring vs. Bright Blondes
While we aren’t claiming that butter-blonde hair will disappear this year, the stylists foresee a trend towards darker shades with natural-looking roots for a trendy, lived-in appearance. "I believe we will see a decline in super bright blondes and an increase in lived-in rooty coloring. Expect to see darker hair colors," Puncerelli says. We’re excited to recreate a striking look Justine Marjan crafted for actress Kathryn Newton during our next salon visit.
