I have worked as a celebrity aesthetician for 40 years—here's how I prepare my clients for the red carpet.

The Lineup is a monthly series that provides an exclusive look into the beauty routines of the most renowned experts and tastemakers in the field. Prepare for a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the essential products that are crucial to their professional lives. If mastering a skill requires 10,000 hours of practice, then celebrity aesthetician Joanna Czech is undoubtedly among the elite in skin health expertise. Celebrating 40 years this year, she has provided top-notch facial treatments to a host of celebrity clients, including starlets like Sabrina Carpenter and Phoebe Dynevor for their red carpet appearances.

Before she became a coveted aesthetician, Czech was an athlete in Poland, where she studied biology and attended beauty school. This journey made her aware of how diet, hydration, exercise, and sleep influenced both her athletic abilities and her skin. This holistic perspective on aesthetics is what she is widely recognized for today.

"For me, skin health is about addressing the entire system," Czech notes. "When you nurture the body holistically—with the right sleep, nutrition, and consistent skin care—your face reflects that." In a world crowded with beauty and wellness trends, her straightforward approach is a breath of fresh air, one she has adhered to throughout her extensive career. "I never pursued fleeting trends. I don't believe in collagen powders, anti-blue-light serums, or skincare crazes lacking scientific backing," she states. "I concentrate on what has always proven effective: correct forms of vitamins A, C, E, ceramides, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide. If a product has the appropriate ingredients in the right forms, with suitable stability and pH levels, it will be effective. Everything else is just noise."

That certainly resonated as a reality check! Fortunately for us, Czech was willing to respond to all my pressing questions about red carpet preparations, Polish skincare secrets, and essential skincare guidelines.

What kinds of treatments do you provide for your celebrity clients? How do you prepare them for the red carpet?

I always tailor my treatments based on my clients' skin needs on any given day. For me, every individual who walks through my door is treated like a celebrity. I assess their skin, considering the current state as well as upcoming events. Do they have a red carpet appearance tomorrow, or perhaps two or three this week? This influences the intensity of treatments like exfoliation, LED therapy, microcurrent, or extractions. Facial massage is also one of my signature methods. When I introduced it to the U.S. nearly 40 years ago, it was unheard of. Even ten years back, when I showcased it on Instagram, people claimed I was stretching the skin. Now, it's understood that it activates the skin, lifts, and enhances circulation. For red carpet events, I focus on massage, ample hydration, gentle exfoliation, possibly a mild oxygenating treatment for radiance, and cryotherapy to lock everything in. Ultimately, it comes down to my intuition—listening to the skin and giving it exactly what it needs in that moment.

Could you share some Polish skincare secrets?

I definitely have a few favorites to share. One of the oldest is using a Polish potato. If you slice a cold, raw potato and place it on the skin, especially over a breakout or a recent blemish, it can be incredibly effective. Potatoes are rich in minerals and vitamin C, and contain an enzyme that serves like natural clay. The starch helps reduce inflammation and absorb excess oil, while the vitamin C brightens and helps prevent hyperpigmentation. Just a 20-minute application of a thin potato slice can ease flare-ups and diminish discoloration. It's akin to our own version of kaolin, but straight from a vegetable.

Another straightforward trick I've relied on for years is creating ice cubes from various teas. I use chamomile for its soothing properties and rosemary tea for de-puffing effects. There’s no need for fancy cryo sticks when you can simply wrap the cube in gauze or gently glide it over the skin, even over a mask, for a cooling, anti-inflammatory treatment.

What are the fundamental skincare rules everyone should know?

      1. Don't mimic your girlfriend's routine: This highlights the need for personalized skincare, recognizing that what works for one may not work for another.

      2. Your face starts at your nipples and ends at your hairline: Skincare should encompass the neck and décolletage, not just the face.

      3. Don’t carry the streets to your sheets: This emphasizes the importance of thoroughly cleansing your skin before bed to eliminate impurities from the day.

      4. Exercise discipline: Consistency is vital in skincare; regular routines yield the best results.

      5. Avoid over-treatment: Less can often be more. Excessive use of products or aggressive treatments can damage the skin's barrier.

      6. Skeptical of skincare trends: Trends may be fleeting, while focusing on timeless principles and what genuinely benefits your skin is what matters
