Neutral Nails Are Always in Fashion—These 8 Classic Shades Prove It
Since my first experience with nail polish, I've always gravitated towards neutral shades. Nowadays, I'm more adventurous with styles and colors (thanks to press-ons), but I still enjoy returning to my roots occasionally. Neutral nail trends fluctuate each year, often reaching their height in autumn when temperatures drop and the seasonal atmosphere shifts. However, I strongly believe these shades can be worn throughout the year as well. Last year, there was a trend of naming beauty styles after desserts—think brownie nails, glazed nails (and skin), etc. While that trend persists, this year also embraces earthy tones. The vibrant colors of autumn leaves, lush greens, and stone fruits inspire the rich hues that dominate the neutral palette. As a neutral nail enthusiast, I've compiled a list of eight favorite shades along with the perfect polishes to achieve each look. Read on for more details.
1. **Plum**
One of my favorite neutral shades is plum. I enjoy that I can choose a more vibrant tone like the one shown here or opt for a deeper variant that still holds the richness of the color. For a change, you can also try this hue in a matte or jelly finish. I prefer using Essie’s Model Clicks 371 nail polish topped with the Gel Couture Top Coat for this effect.
2. **Ash Brown**
While ash brown isn't my personal favorite, I admire it on others. This shimmery chrome version uses mirror powder, which elevates a commonly loved color.
3. **Terra-Cotta**
It may sound unusual, but one of my top earth-tone colors is terra-cotta—yes, like that of a typical clay plant pot. It brings a rich and calming vibe to my space, and I don’t hesitate to wear nail polish in similar tones. I think it looks fabulous on longer almond-shaped nails, but square nails look just as stylish.
4. **Acorn**
Chocolate, acorn, brownies… The brown nail trend has been referred to in many ways over the years, but one thing is certain: it's not fading away anytime soon. Deep browns often peak in fall and winter, but you can certainly experiment with various shades of brown all year long. My go-to brown polish is All Checked Out by Essie, or I look for press-ons like Gone Riding from Chillhouse with brown designs.
5. **Olive**
I find olive tones to be cozy yet playful. This shade isn’t overly bold, but its richness keeps it from appearing too dull. Like plum, I believe this color can look striking with a jelly finish or extra shine.
6. **Cherry**
A bright, classic red manicure is always in style. Personally, however, I can’t quite pull off that trend. I instead gravitate towards darker cherry-like shades that honor the trend while complementing my skin tone.
7. **Earth Green**
This deeper green shade is brighter than the earlier olive hue, making it a great choice for those who favor darker tones all year round. It reminds me of the vibrant greenery found in forests and evergreens. At first glance, it’s subtle, but its richness is captivating.
8. **Baby Blue**
Hot take: Baby blue deserves a spot in the neutral nail collection. I prefer this light and airy shade over cream colors, which can feel overly safe. It also conveys a calmer vibe compared to cool gray polishes. It's elegant, eye-catching, and incredibly versatile.
