Not Loafers, Not Ballet Flats—The "Outdated" Flat-Shoe Style That French Women Frequently Wear

Having long dismissed the discomfort of wearing heels from morning to night, I’m constantly searching for flat shoe styles that exude the same elegance and refinement. My collection already includes plenty of ballet flats and loafers, but I’ve recently discovered a new flat-shoe trend that is frequently seen on the most fashionable French women. Sleek, sophisticated, and inherently chic, T-bar flats are making their presence felt this season. Reminiscent of the school shoes I wore daily, the current versions feel distinctly adult, though I must say the back-to-school vibe makes them ideal for September outfits.

Not too different from the beloved Mary Janes, the T-bar flat features an additional leather strap that forms a T-shape across the foot. While T-bar shoes may have gone unnoticed in recent times, I first noticed their return earlier this year in the form of summer sandals and heeled styles; a precursor, if you will, to the closed-toe versions that are now gaining popularity.

It’s no surprise that the French have already embraced them as a wardrobe staple. Their blend of comfort, elegance, and understated sophistication perfectly embodies Parisian style, which is more than enough reason for me to incorporate them into my own lineup. This autumn, I plan to wear mine with everything from pleated skirts to relaxed jeans. Scroll down to shop the T-bar flats to know about this season.
