Whenever I smell a fragrance and think, "Wow, that perfume smells lovely," there’s a note in it that gives off an expensive aroma.
I adore fragrance compliments—it's my favorite type of compliment! So, you can bet I return the favor whenever I can. Recently, I've developed a fascination for iris-infused fragrances. Honestly, I initially overlooked this underrated note; however, after complimenting a fourth stranger on their scent, I decided to investigate each recommendation for commonalities (you know, in true beauty journalist style). As you might expect, the common thread was iris—soft, lovely, and reminiscent of luxury. Now, I deliberately look for this note while perfume shopping, especially with fall approaching. I liken iris to the cashmere sweater of the fragrance world—timeless and effortlessly stylish. Much like that incredibly soft garment, the velvety note pairs beautifully with almost anything. Need some examples? Check out my top iris perfumes below.
Before we jump into the list, I should clarify that "iris" refers to the odorless plant, while "orris" is the term commonly used in fragrance compositions. "In perfumery, the rhizome of the flower (the roots) is processed to extract the orris concrete and absolute," explains Pascal Gaurin, VP senior perfumer at IFF. Therefore, you'll find both "iris" and "orris" used interchangeably in the following selections—know they refer to the same powdery note.

**Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose Perfume**
Key notes: Grapefruit, rose, violet, iris, raspberry, vanilla, sandalwood, musk
Olfactory family: Floral
Old Hollywood glamour captured in a bottle, Lipstick Rose evokes the experience of applying the perfect red in a softly lit powder room. Perfumer Ralf Schwieger designed this scent inspired by his mother's lipstick, but don't expect it to smell waxy or stale. The blend of violet, iris, and rose creates a delicate and luxurious aroma. Believe me, this perfume makes you feel like a million bucks.
Customer review: "This perfume is very elegant; sweet, powdery violet and rose, subtle yet strong. I only need one spray on dry skin, and it lasts over six hours. I love it."
**Key notes:** Pink pepper, iris, ambrette, ambrox
Olfactory family: Floral woody musk
Did you know the beloved Glossier scent is grounded in iris for its gentle, familiar essence? The note has an earthy undertone that complements sparkling pink pepper and warm, subtly sweet ambrette. While the blend interacts differently with everyone (it’s true), I adore how these powdery notes shine on my skin.
Customer review: "This is my third bottle of Glossier You. I love its freshness; it’s unique. People always ask what I’m wearing. Even when I can’t detect the scent, others can."
**Key notes:** Green galbanum, iris, rose, ylang-ylang, lily of the valley
Olfactory family: Floral green
Here’s the last fragrance launched and worn by Gabrielle Chanel, named N°19 in celebration of her birthday, August 19. Fresh, floral, and mildly woody, this scent radiates during spring, but I believe it’s refined enough for year-round usage. In fact, I recommend wearing it on dreary winter mornings for an instant uplift.
Customer review: "I adore everything about this parfum. I'm a devoted Chanel wearer. All my fragrances are Chanel. I never thought I’d find another I love as much as N°5 until I discovered N°19. It’s soft, easy to wear, and matches everything."
**Dior Bois D'argent Eau de Parfum**
Key notes: Wood accords, iris, frankincense
Olfactory family: Woody floral
Iris fragrances don’t have to be soft and feminine. Take this luxurious Dior blend, for instance; it’s wood-centric with a touch of iris, as the brand describes it. Earthy and comforting, while that hint of iris adds a clean quality reminiscent of fresh laundry. It’s a fabulous unisex scent, in my opinion, sure to draw people in.
Customer review: "After trying a sample, I loved it so much that I bought the full size. It’s a fresh, non-cloying scent that smells pleasantly clean. When I hug someone, they often comment on how wonderful I smell. I prefer a fragrance that doesn’t announce my arrival before I do."
**Eauso Vert Sintra Eau De Parfum**
Key notes: Bergamot, lemon, mimosa, lavandin, orris, sandalwood, musk
Olfactory family: Floral musk
Iris often appears in a variety of skin scents (like Glossier You) due to its soft, comforting finish, but when combined with musk—another hero in skin scents—this blend becomes even more
