So, you've purchased the Dyson Airwrap (or you're planning to). Now you might be curious about how to utilize it. As a hair-enthusiast beauty editor who has owned the Dyson Airwrap for four years (and has tested three different models of the hair multistyler), I acknowledge that it does require some knowledge and practice to get the hang of it. With more attachments than a typical hot brush, patience and understanding are key to mastering this airstyler.
In fact, my colleagues and friends frequently ask me how to operate the Dyson Airwrap (and my For You Page is populated with people similarly unsure), so I thought it was time to create a comprehensive step-by-step guide with all the tips and tricks to optimize your attachments and, most importantly, ensure your curls endure. This is the most common question I receive regarding the Dyson Airwrap—and yes, it is achievable.
Additionally, with the introduction of the new Dyson Coandax2, the latest Airwrap model, I figured I would tackle both objectives simultaneously and test it. Therefore, I have compiled a step-by-step guide on how to use the Dyson Airwrap for your most voluminous blow-dry yet.
How to Use the Dyson Airwrap
1. **Preparation of Your Hair**
I believe this step is the most crucial. For a bouncy blow-dry look, here are some tips. First, make sure your hair is completely shampooed (preferably with a clarifying shampoo) to eliminate any product buildup and oil that can weigh it down and cause your style to fall flat, particularly if you have fine or thin hair. When your hair is clean, your roots will have enhanced volume, and the lengths will possess more bounce.
As someone with thick, wavy, frizz-prone hair, I prefer Ouai Detox Shampoo (£28) and Philip Kingsley Flaky/Itchy Scalp Shampoo (£31). I also recommend a lightweight conditioner to avoid weighing down the ends. I enjoy Kérastase Premiere Bond Advanced Conditioner (£41), or I opt for Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Hair Gloss (£30) as a treatment for added shine.
On towel-dried hair, I like to use a heat-protectant spray (here, I’m applying Kérastase Gloss Absolu Anti-Frizz Glaze Milk (£43). Depending on your hair type, you might also consider a hair mousse, serum, or volumizing products before styling to provide extra hold, volume, and bounce. Just be cautious not to use too much product. A favorite of mine is Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Volume Blow Dry Foam (£28); its foam texture helps lock in the style without weighing hair down. I also run a bit of Dyson's Chitosan Pre-Style Cream (£26) through my lengths to prep my hair. I swear by my Wet Brush Detangler Brush (£8) for detangling my hair and ensuring even product distribution.
2. **Rough Dry**
A crucial point: you want to use your Airwrap on hair that is approximately 80% dry, so refrain from using it on completely wet hair! Start by roughly drying with the hair dryer attachment, focusing on the roots. I prefer my roots to be fully dry since it’s challenging to achieve full dryness with the other Airwrap attachments (especially with thick hair), and any dampness at the roots can lead to quicker style drooping. If you seek an additional volume boost here, flip your head upside down while drying. Keep a slight amount of moisture in your lengths before using the curling barrels, round brush, or paddle brush, so leave the remainder of your hair around 80-90% dry.
For a straight and sleek appearance, you can utilize the paddle-brush attachment to smooth and stretch the hair while drying, before finishing with the Airsmooth attachment to eliminate any remaining frizz or flyaways. If you have an older Dyson Airwrap model, switch the hair dryer attachment to the Flyaway Smoother setting. If you desire a bouncy look, keep reading.
3. **Round Brush**
The round-brush attachment is one of my favorites that the Airwrap provides. If you have a fringe or face-framing layers, I recommend using it to style those sections, but I would also use this attachment for your entire head if your hair doesn’t hold a curl well with the curling barrels. This tool allows you to achieve the necessary tension for creating long-lasting styles with a
