Lorena Saravia Discusses Being the First Mexican Designer to Collaborate With H&M and Shares Her Recommendations for Mexico City.
For the last 21 years, H&M has partnered with designers from various countries, including England (Stella McCartney), Japan (Rei Kawakubo), France (Isabel Marant), Italy (Roberto Cavalli), and Ireland (Simone Rocha). However, until now, the retailer has not collaborated with a Mexican brand. Now, fifteen years after launching her own label, Lorena Saravia has become the first Mexican designer to collaborate with H&M. To learn more about this historic partnership, I traveled to Mexico City for an interview with Saravia herself. "It's a tremendous honor to be the first Mexican designer to work with H&M," Saravia shared with Who What Wear. "H&M was an ideal match as we shared similar visions and values for this collaboration." H&M Creative Advisor Ann-Sofie Johansson concurred. "We admire Lorena's design and her aesthetic. It feels very H&M," Johansson stated. "It's effortless, cool, and strong, blending Mexican craftsmanship with glamour and romance."
The 29-piece collection, set to launch at 10 a.m. EST on October 16, features stunning jackets, skirts, hats, boots, and more. The accompanying visuals are also exceptionally striking. "With the campaign for this collaboration, we aimed to depict a contemporary Mexico, showcasing a strong, empowered Mexican woman and the significance of heritage and tradition," Saravia explained. I also inquired about some of Saravia's favorite places in Mexico City. "My favorite neighborhood is La Colonia Roma, where I work and live," she mentioned. "It's a vibrant area in the city filled with art, numerous restaurants, and a lively nightlife." Saravia highlighted Contramar as her favorite restaurant, noting that its chef and owner, Gabriela Cámara, catered the official dinner party for the Lorena Saravia x H&M collaboration the night before its online launch. She also recommended Camino Real Polanco, one of her preferred hotels in CDMX, designed by renowned architect Luis Barragán and his disciple Ricardo Legorreta, calling it a place with "a very special vibe."
