Loves of My Life: Frida Giannini
The most impactful interviews are often those that delve into personal experiences. In "Loves of My Life," we explore the essence of the individual behind their artistry, posing essential questions that intrigue us—their favorite restaurants and romantic spots, the piece of jewelry they cherish the most, and the contents of their handbags. Essentially, these are the true loves in their lives.
Frida Giannini is a renowned Italian designer celebrated for her role as Creative Director at Gucci from 2005 to 2015. She began her career at Fendi in 1997 and quickly ascended before joining Gucci in 2002. Giannini is acknowledged for her significant impact on the fashion industry and her dedication to craftsmanship, heritage, and the preservation of culture. She has partnered with organizations such as UNICEF, LACMA, and the Martin Scorsese Foundation, contributing to global education, film restoration, and the arts. In 2013, she co-founded Chime for Change with Beyoncé and Salma Hayek.
Her recent endeavors encompass fashion, interior design, and publishing, showcasing her enthusiasm for timeless luxury and artistic creativity. Her upcoming achievement includes a capsule collection with the iconic London department store Liberty, in honor of their 150th anniversary. Named HYPERNOVA 150, Frida's collection embodies a celebration of contrasts—blending elegance and edginess, tradition and rebellion, and British customs with contemporary glamour.
Can you share your experience working with the Liberty design team and what inspired that collection?
I felt incredibly honored to be part of this project as it's rare for companies to reach 150 years. Liberty has been a significant part of British culture in London. I had a deep understanding of Liberty; it was always a must-visit when I lived in London. I researched extensively, looking into reference books about the history of the artists working with Liberty and the surrounding arts and crafts. In London and British culture, I notice a persistent contrast between tradition, like the royal family, and a punkish spirit, making it one of the most vibrant places I've ever called home. I spent a couple of years in London, deeply absorbing the city's spirit, which I still adore.
I have fondness for Hampstead Heath and Whitechapel. One of my favorite places is Leighton House, which has been around since the Victorian era. It’s a museum filled with original Victorian furnishings, and a photographer once took me there—it's truly stunning.
If you had 72 hours in London, what would be your favorite hotel and why?
I’m a long-time fan of Claridge's—I always return there. They know me well and are familiar with my preferred room. Their tea room, where breakfast is served, has an ambiance and decor that I absolutely love.
When you visit London, what do you enjoy shopping for or indulging in?
If I have the chance to shop, I always return home with a trunk filled with interesting finds. I have a passion for stationery, enjoy purchasing vinyl records in Carnaby Street, and love the area between King's Road and Chelsea, which is packed with renowned brands as well as more unique labels that I enjoy discovering.
What are your handbag essentials?
The first item I place in my bag is my headphones, as I listen to a lot of music. In fact, I even sleep with music—it acts as my sleeping aid! I also carry earplugs, a book, and a good candle. The first thing I buy at the airport or when I arrive in London is a quality candle.
Who is your all-time favorite musical artist?
Bowie, without a doubt, because he was groundbreaking in nearly every aspect. He was a trailblazer as a performer, in electronic music, and with his unique personal style. He also pioneered collaborations, like the one with fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto, and was an innovator in makeup, known for his androgyny and fluidity.
What are some of your all-time favorite films?
I adore "Blow Up" (1966), "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (1992), "Black Swan" (2010), and "American Gigolo" (1980), the latter being a tribute to Mr. Giorgio Armani, who was a dear friend of mine.
What scent do you prefer?
BDK Parfums Rouge Smoking Extrait.
Are you a collector of anything specific?
I collect photographs by Richard Avedon, vintage furniture from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and anything related to David Bowie—including photos, vinyl records, original covers, and books.
Can you share a piece of advice from someone you cherish that has stayed with you?
In general, I believe the best advice I can give to myself and others during tough times—because everyone undergoes struggles at some point—is to look ahead
