It all started with a red Ford Mustang, a spontaneous road trip during the pandemic to Florida, and a shared leap of faith. "We matched on Hinge in early March 2020 when we were both in Brooklyn, but somehow, we both ended up in wild Florida for several months," writer and editor Hadley Mendelsohn remembers about her unexpected meeting with her now-husband, media planning and sales director Charles Lewis III. According to Mendelsohn's brother-in-law, who officiated their wedding, the couple communicated through texts for two months, finding comfort and hope amidst uncertain times.
When it was finally time for Mendelsohn and Lewis to meet, they did so in grand style, with Mendelsohn renting a red Mustang convertible for the occasion. "I drove three hours (I hate driving) across a road called Alligator Alley to meet him," Mendelsohn shares. Her friend Zoe referred to it as "the Mustang trip to your love" during her speech at their reception. Although concerned about her best friend meeting "a man from the internet," Zoe was relieved when everything went well—actually, it went great. Mendelsohn recalls, "I ended up staying the entire weekend." Despite the option to lose touch after returning to their lives in New York, they chose to keep their relationship going strong.
Four years into their relationship, over Labor Day weekend, the couple traveled to upstate New York, their first trip together. "I knew it was happening, but [Charles] thought it was a complete surprise," Mendelsohn reveals about their engagement. "It was raining, and I was reading outside on the porch. He kept coming back inside to 'change his shirt.' I figured something was up, but I was trying to act like I didn't know. Eventually, he asked me to come inside for a pre-dinner drink and had me check under the porch swing for cider. When I saw the box with Liv Luttrell's branding, he proposed, and the rest is a blur."
After the proposal, Mendelsohn jumped right into planning the wedding. "I wanted a summer wedding because I love the heat and didn’t want a winter affair, and I was simply excited and decisive," she states. The couple selected September 6, 2025, at Straus Home Ranch, an organic farm in Marshall, California, located in the scenic hills of Point Reyes. Mendelsohn shares, "We love visiting Marshall as an escape while spending time with my family in the Bay Area." The venue had the perfect combination of charm and character. "Many places felt corporate in their communications and atmosphere," she explains. "This venue felt refreshing. The family that runs it is incredibly kind, genuine, and humorous. It felt like we could relax with them, stay in their childhood home, and possibly get married there."

"The welcome party took place in the garden behind a lovely hotel called Olema House. I love BBQ (one of our first dates in NYC was at Hometown BBQ, which remains a favorite), so we opted for a BBQ dinner."

I appreciated the slightly spooky vibe from the black lace details. I paired it with my mom's black Manolo Blahnik 1990 kitten heels adorned with a pearl tassel and a black patchwork-sequin coat by Dries Van Noten from the 2010s. Dries ended up being a significant designer for the weekend—my mom and sister wore it as well, and Charles's suit for Friday night was from the brand too. My sister lent me our late Aunt Jojo's ring (she's passed) to wear on my index finger; it's a stunning gold ring with a diamond center. I also spritzed Byredo Animalique on myself."
