It all started with a red Ford Mustang, a pandemic road trip across Florida, and a shared leap of faith. "We matched on Hinge in early March 2020 while we were both in Brooklyn, but somehow ended up in wild Florida for several months," recalls writer and editor Hadley Mendelsohn about her unexpected meet-cute with her now-husband, media planning and sales director Charles Lewis III. As Mendelsohn’s brother-in-law, who officiated their wedding, noted, the couple spent two months texting each other, finding solace and hope during uncertain times.
When Mendelsohn and Lewis finally arranged to meet, they did so in grand style, with Mendelsohn renting a red convertible Mustang for the occasion. "I drove three hours (I’m not a fan of driving) along a road called Alligator Alley just to meet him," shares Mendelsohn. Her friend Zoe lovingly labeled it "the Mustang trip to your love" during her speech at their reception. Though she initially worried about her best friend meeting "a man from the internet," she was relieved when everything went exceptionally well. "I ended up staying the whole weekend," Mendelsohn recalls. Even after returning to their lives in New York post-pandemic, they chose to stay in touch and officially build their relationship.
Fast forward to four years later, during Labor Day weekend, the couple took their first trip together to upstate New York. "I had a feeling it was coming, but [Charles] thought it was a total surprise," Mendelsohn shares of their engagement moment. "It was raining, and I was reading on our porch. He kept coming back to 'change his shirt.' I figured something was up but tried not to let on that I knew. Eventually, he invited me inside for a pre-dinner drink and told me to look under the porch swing for the cider. I spotted a box with Liv Luttrell's branding, and then he proposed. The rest is a blur."
Following the proposal, Mendelsohn jumped right into wedding planning. "I started immediately because I love the heat and didn’t want a winter wedding, but I was also just eager and decided," she says. Together, they selected September 6, 2025, at Straus Home Ranch, a working organic farm in Marshall, California, tucked amid the rolling hills of Point Reyes. "We enjoy exploring Marshall, which is close to my family in the Bay Area, as an escape," Mendelsohn explains. The venue struck the right balance of charm and authenticity. "Many venues felt corporate, both in their communication and style," she notes. "This one felt refreshing. The family running it was so kind, genuine, and amusing. It felt like we could hang out with them, stay in their childhood home, and maybe even marry there too."

"The Friday welcome party took place in the garden behind a wonderful little hotel called Olema House. I love BBQ (one of our initial dates in NYC was at Hometown BBQ, a spot we still frequent), so we opted for a BBQ dinner."

I also liked its slightly spooky vibe with the black lace detailing. I paired it with my mom's 1990 black Manolo Blahnik kitten heels adorned with a pearl tassel and a black patchwork-sequin Dries Van Noten coat from the 2010s. Dries played a significant role this weekend—my mom and sister wore it, and Charles's suit Friday night was from the same brand. My sister lent me our late paternal aunt Jojo's ring to wear on my index finger—it's a stunning gold ring with a diamond in the center. I also spritzed Byredo Animalique on myself."
