It's not yet boot season—everywhere I turn, I see these trending flats from The Row.
If money were not a concern, I would create a closet that could compete with The Row’s Mayfair boutique, outfitted with a James Turrell light fixture, mid-century modern furnishings, and the latest collections from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Although this dream is far from reality, I am content to live vicariously through those who have the resources to indulge. Certainly, there’s little that these stylish dressers couldn't persuade me on when it comes to their specific brand of luxurious minimalism and unique signatures. However, I must admit that there was one style that needed a bit more convincing than the rest. It’s not the grosgrain ribbon and rubber Dune flip-flops, ’80s-inspired turquoise Mara jelly sandals, or the orange embossed medallion print towel meant to go over boxy blazers and pristine white T-shirts. (Regrettably, all of these remain on my wish list, and I would gladly own them instantly.) Rather, it’s The Row’s Canal loafers that took a bit more contemplation. Featuring a deconstructed shape, rounded toe, and raised stitching that adorns the top of the calfskin shoe, I initially dismissed them as somewhat grandpa-like, and less flattering compared to the more popular Eel loafers. How mistaken I was.
This week, I spotted numerous fashion insiders wearing these loafers, prompting a significant change in my perception. From chic New Yorkers who included them in their sample sale finds to stylish Londoners pairing them with chic funnel-neck jackets and tailored jeans, these loafers are everywhere I look. The most influential moment, however, occurred earlier this month when Kendall Jenner wore a pair during Paris Fashion Week. The French capital is an endless source of fashion inspiration, and her outfit truly made me crave the Canal loafers. She served as a walking advertisement for the brand, showcasing a grey pencil skirt and tailored trench coat from The Row, accessorized with an elegant triangle scarf from Almina Concept.
Certainly, for those keen on celebrity street style like me, this isn’t the first time she has donned these loafers. In fact, the supermodel wore them to attend The Row’s spring/summer 2023 runway show in the City of Lights a few years ago, pairing them with a similar look featuring a calf-length skirt and a cropped double-breasted shirt-jacket.
Others in the fashion scene have also been seen wearing them, including Elizabeth Olsen, Zoë Kravitz, Elle Fanning, and Sofia Richie Grainge. Priced at an eye-watering £960, the loafers are indeed a splurge, but as these moments highlight, they’re destined to become the next viral trend. I can’t think of a better time to invest in them, especially with winter approaching.
In terms of styling, I would take inspiration from the ever-stylish Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, pairing them with straight leg blue denim jeans, a black button-down shirt with rolled-up sleeves, and a large wool coat with dropped shoulders.
