Seen on Mercer Street: The Unexpectedly Chic Method Fashion Enthusiasts Are Sporting Belts This Winter
One instance might be coincidence, but two signals a trend. On Thursday evening, Simone Ashley and Paloma Elsesser collaborated to unofficially reveal one of the top styling trends for winter 2025: using a belt to create shape in your faux-fur coat. The two attended a Mango event on Mercer Street in Manhattan's SoHo district, both donning faux-fur outerwear from the Spanish fashion brand. Ashley's ensemble featured a purple faux-fur coat (which will be available on October 28), styled as a dress paired with slingback heels, a sparkling mini bag, and a black-and-silver belt cinched at her waist to add definition to the voluminous jacket. Elsesser chose a similarly stylish look, consisting of a brown fur vest cinched with a slim black belt, a black bodysuit, and rounded-toe heels. Despite their differences, both outfits showcased the same styling technique, positioning it as a significant trend for the season—well before winter kicks off.
While Ashley and Elsesser may be the most prominent figures sporting this trend, they certainly weren't the first to popularize it. Across Europe, well-dressed stylists and content creators have been layering belts over fur coats for years, relying on this styling method every winter to keep their cold-weather looks both warm and visually appealing. Sylvie Mus combined her dark-brown vintage coat with a thick black belt, tights, and boots, while Elly McGaw styled a fur-like fringe coat with a buckle-free black belt and black pumps. More recently, at the Khaite show in New York, Ilirida Krasniqi wore a pony-hair leopard-print coat accessorized with a black belt, bag, and heels.
