Summer’s Gone, Fall’s Here: All the Essentials I’m Purchasing to *Finally* Transition My Wardrobe

I know, I know: Spring is typically the time for a major closet overhaul, but for me, fall is when I transition my wardrobe and get rid of all the pieces I hardly wear. It’s time to say goodbye to my worn-out, stretched summer basics and replace them with fresh, modern options for the autumn and winter seasons. I'm a bit behind schedule since fashion month distracted me from my wardrobe tasks, but I have some time now, so before I get sidetracked again, I’m committing to this. Out with the summer staples, and in with the fall ones.

While some of my basics for fall and winter 2025 will include items I've regularly purchased—like Uniqlo U crewneck tees and J.Crew cashmere sweaters—this year, I’m also updating my essential wardrobe with particularly "of the moment" pieces such as V-neck knits, dark-wash jeans, and boatneck tops. They're still basics, but they come off as more contemporary and relevant for the upcoming season, adding a bit of flair to my usual seasonal refresh.

Scroll down to see what other fresh basics I'm adding to my collection for the colder months ahead.

      **Dark-Wash Jeans**

Believe me when I say I own 50 pairs of jeans. I really need to cull the pairs I haven’t worn in ages, especially now that I’m looking to swap many of my lighter-wash, wide-leg options for darker, more fitted alternatives. Dark jeans simply look more chic, especially in the fall and winter.

      **V-Neck Cashmere Sweater**

I have too many cashmere sweaters, but few of them are V-necks, which is my preferred style for layering over white t-shirts. This season, V-necks feel more sophisticated and appealing than crewnecks and turtlenecks, which is why I’m looking to invest in several new options from brands like J.Crew, Nordstrom, and Almina Concept.

      **Slim-Fit Ankle Boots**

I've never been a huge fan of ankle boots because they often have too wide an ankle that looks odd with slimmer jeans. However, this season, I’ve spotted lots of slim-fit ankle boots that are convincing me I need a pair (or more). I’m particularly drawn to Khaite's Nevada boots, which feature a fun yet subtle Western style, but both Zara and Raye have offerings that are also worth considering.

      **Boatneck Tees**

While I will certainly be stocking up on new plain white t-shirts for layering this fall and winter, I also plan to acquire boatneck tees, which are currently very trendy. This style feels more elegant and refined than a basic crewneck, making it suitable for wearing alone with a large coat, rather than just layering beneath sweaters.

      **Black Trousers**

Many of my black trousers from previous years don’t fit what I’m looking for in 2025. They are either too loose, too puddly, or too high-waisted. Right now, I’m searching for slightly loose, low-rise black trousers that retain a relaxed but polished look. Thankfully, brands like Reformation and Rue Sophie offer perfect options for fall and winter.

      - Reformation Vida Low Rise Pant

      - COS Milano Straight-Leg Pants

      **Collarless Blazer**

While I won’t completely eliminate classic blazers from my wardrobe, I aim to replace some of my existing styles with more fitted, collarless versions that align better with my tastes for 2025. I especially like Reformation's Morning Doug jacket in burgundy, which was part of a collaboration with former Who What Wear cover star Nara Smith.

      **Burgundy Knee-High Boots**

If you're looking for knee-high boots this fall, I suggest opting for burgundy instead of black. I’ve been enamored with this boot color since I saw Saint Laurent's Françoise pair, which is nearly sold out everywhere. Fortunately, a newer option called the Jill boots is available, and Reformation and Zara also have some great alternatives.
