Alexa Chung's Universe: Her Successful Partnership with Madewell, Influential Style Icons, and Bold Fashion Opinions
Immerse yourself in the realm of the most intriguing creatives in the fashion scene with our new series My World, where readers will learn how leading stylists, designers, and trendsetters carved their paths; their favorite hidden gem restaurants and hotels, cherished obscure albums and fashion discoveries; the etiquette guidelines they uphold; and much more. The year was 2007. Photographs of a relatively unknown British figure began appearing on online blogs and in magazines. She was spotted at the Glastonbury Music Festival dressed in a leather biker jacket, striped t-shirt, denim shorts, and fitted over-the-knee boots. She seemed to emerge from nowhere and quickly captured the cultural moment in a way only possible in the mid-2000s. Her name was Alexa Chung, and her unique charm was as hard to define as it was impactful. For many, Chung was the first "style icon" to leave an impression. Long before social media algorithms or Pinterest boards, a small website named Tumblr.com allowed users to search for and curate fashion and cultural inspiration, and Chung reigned as its queen.
Fast forward to today, and Chung stands as a versatile creative force, seamlessly navigating various pursuits and evading any rigid labels. On one hand, she is a published author; her coffee table book, It, featuring her personal writings, sketches, and photos, was released in 2014, and she frequently contributes to the Financial Times. On the other hand, she is a model, having recently walked the runways for Chloé and Miu Miu, and when she’s not modeling, she occupies a front-row seat at their shows. Additionally, she is a designer, having led her namesake ready-to-wear line from 2017 to 2022, and she is currently collaborating with Madewell on her third capsule collection. Ahead, Chung discusses her career journey that earned her the title of ultimate It-girl, her ever-popular Madewell collaboration, her favorite ways to unwind in London, and much more. You’ve taken on numerous roles over the years, from design and business to being a published author. It must be hard to choose, but if you could focus on just one, what would it be?
I would love to be a creative director because that role encompasses everything. While I enjoy design, I also have a passion for art direction and considering how people wear clothes and the lifestyles they lead. Storytelling is essential to me, so I appreciate all aspects of that role—you get to write copy for the website, manage gifting, strategize with influencers, and engage in design, styling, and campaign imagery—it puts you at the forefront of it all.
You’ve just released the third installment of your collection for Madewell. What inspired you when crafting this one?
I aimed for it to be more personal and a reflection of my own wardrobe and style. One inspiring image on my mood board was of Fran Lebowitz, an iconic New Yorker. There's a stunning photo of her lounging on a white sofa at an Oscars party that perfectly captured the atmosphere I wanted to evoke with this collection—a festive party vibe where you're all dressed up. In that particular shot, she’s in a tuxedo, and my take on that was creating a tuxedo jumpsuit, which I adore because it feels both casual and elegant.
If you could pick just one piece from this latest collection, which would it be?
I would choose the Ronnie Leather Fringe Jacket. I find it absolutely irresistible. It’s fabulous and will only get better with wear.
What is one item you have on your shopping list right now?
I’m really into those almond-toe mini heels that have a contemporary twist on an '80s style. I love how they pair well with thick socks, making you look put-together even if you're in denim and a sweatshirt. Adding a pop of color with unexpected socks and those little '80s shoes would look adorable.
What do you think is the most quintessentially British aspect of your wardrobe?
I have more outerwear and coats than anything else, which is a real space challenge. Despite having a wardrobe, I also have a rolling rack just for coats due to lack of space. My love for outerwear is such a clear signal of my Britishness because I'm dedicated to braving any weather and going outside. I refuse to take a cab and will always walk to the tube.
You’ve worn so many memorable outfits. Is there one you look back on fondly? What's the story behind it?
The first one that comes to mind is the Loewe silk dress featuring a trompe l'oeil trench coat print. I would love to own it, and after I borrowed it for the 2023 British Vogue Forces for Change party, the courier picked it up the next morning at 9 a.m., just like Cinderella. I often think about it and would wear it all
