In honor of Who What Wear UK’s 10th birthday, we reflected on the most memorable moments from fashion week over the last decade. Throughout these years, we have experienced it all, having attended numerous runway shows in London, Paris, Milan, and New York, reviewing various collections and embracing (and shopping!) the most significant trends each season has brought. Such fun!
Our keen fashion eye has dissected every show from 2015 to the present, and we’ve compiled a top-ten list. From the reunion of '90s supermodels at Versace to an expansive pink runway at Jacquemus and the twin-themed showcase at Gucci, there have been many breathtaking moments, but only ten made the final list. Without a doubt, these are the ten most iconic runway shows of the past decade. Let’s dive in!
1. **Chanel A/W 17**
Karl Lagerfeld's era at Chanel produced numerous iconic instances, with one of the standout shows being held at Paris's renowned Grand Palais. From a hyper-real supermarket to a man-made beach, an Arctic setting to a Parisian brasserie, Lagerfeld's imagination knew no limits. Our personal favorite was the space-station backdrop for the women's autumn/winter 2017 show, featuring a Chanel-branded rocket ship that appeared to launch through the ceiling while models showcased NASA-inspired outfits. Picture silver glittery boots, classic boucle twin sets, and galaxy-print dresses as Elton John's "Rocket Man" filled the air. Beyond!
2. **Versace S/S 18**
Donatella Versace is certainly one of the most iconic figures in fashion. For the spring/summer 2018 show, she paid tribute to her late brother and founder of the House, Gianni, presenting a collection that highlighted his signature prints, gold accents, and alluring silhouettes, culminating in a finale featuring a host of supermodels. Strutting down the runway herself, Versace was accompanied by Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Helena Christensen, evoking memories of George Michael's hit "Freedom! '90," and its music video featuring many of these models. It was a profoundly heartfelt and significant moment.
3. **Jacquemus S/S 20**
Simon Porte Jacquemus launched his namesake label in 2009, honoring his late mother. The appeal of his designs quickly propelled him into the mainstream, characterized by whimsical handbags, oversized hats, and skin-baring ready-to-wear. For his spring/summer 2020 show marking the brand's 10th anniversary, Jacquemus staged a co-ed runway amidst the lavender fields of the French countryside, near his childhood home. Models walked down a seemingly endless fuchsia runway surrounded by rows of purple lavender—colors synonymous with the brand. The collection’s vibrant colors, muted neutrals, scenic prints, and watercolor florals made it striking and solidified Jacquemus’ position in the realms of fashion, social media, and pop culture. We were absolutely charmed!
4. **Loewe A/W 22**
Since Jonathan Anderson became Loewe's creative director in 2013, things have transformed drastically. Infusing art, craftsmanship, and high-concept design into all his collections, the Irish designer has solidified Loewe's status as one of the most coveted luxury labels today. For the spring/summer 2022 show, he incorporated surreal forms, dramatic drapery, clothes worn backward, and high-shine metallic breastplates. Accessories inspired by pop-art included heels shaped like roses, birthday candles, and broken eggs. This collection was not only avant-garde and fun but also highly wearable. Kendall Jenner lent serious celebrity appeal when she was seen in one of the digital-print jersey tank dresses.
5. **Miu Miu S/S 22**
When Miu Miu unveiled its spring/summer 2022 collection, it seemed impossible to walk a short distance without spotting one of its looks on magazine covers at your local newsstand. The collection garnered praise for its preppy suiting, poplin shirts, cable knits, pleated twill skirts, and glimpses of logo-laden lingerie, with many pieces cleverly
