It's evident that the fashion crowd is heavily favoring brown, embracing it across leggings, knits, and various footwear. This deep, chocolate-like shade is emerging as one of the most popular color trends for 2025, and its impact is currently making waves in the beauty scene. For instance, brown monochromatic makeup is in vogue this season, while an espresso manicure is a clever choice for elevating any outfit's appearance. "Clients are gravitating towards chocolatey, soft tones that exude luxury yet still feel grounded—just like their autumn wardrobes," states editorial manicurist Jin Soon Choi, the founder of JinSoon. For those looking to enhance their style, I highly recommend chocolate suede nails—a sleek and luxurious manicure that mirrors high fashion. Below, you'll find a full breakdown.
What exactly are chocolate suede nails? Simply put, chocolate suede nails are a chocolate-brown manicure featuring a velvety matte finish. While they won't have the classic fuzzy feel, the right polish and topcoat combination can create a soft, suede-like appearance. "The color feels indulgent, reminiscent of a cashmere sweater or leather boots. There’s a softness and strength that’s just right for colder seasons," Choi explains, describing the trend as both elevated and cozy. "With a matte finish, these shades achieve a soft, suede-like look that's visually appealing and seasonally appropriate." She adds, "They're trendy as they closely mirror current runway and street style, while also being timeless and flattering on all skin tones." All you need is a richly pigmented brown polish (recommendations coming soon!) that complements your undertones.
How to Achieve the Look
Don’t skip on manicure preparation! According to Choi, the shape of your nails can significantly affect the suede-like finish. Short square or squoval shapes are ideal, but you may also choose longer almond or round shapes for a more editorial vibe. "These shapes reflect the softness of the trend while maintaining a clean and chic appearance," Choi notes. "Because chocolate tones are visually substantial, pairing them with well-proportioned, elegant shapes enhances the overall refinement and wearability." Once you've achieved your desired shape, it’s time to select a polish. Any richly pigmented chocolate brown will suffice, as long as it has red, cocoa, or neutral undertones. "Avoid anything too ashy or grey," Choi cautions. Now isn't the time for bold nail art; to effectively replicate a swatch of suede, Choi recommends a clean and minimal approach. (However, glossy French tips will always look chic.) After applying a couple of smooth, even coats, complete the manicure with a matte topcoat to achieve that desirable texture.
Be aware that not all matte topcoats are the same. "Some matte finishes can appear chalky or excessively dry. The aim is for a velvety, touchable surface that still feels luxurious," Choi clarifies. "The matte finish refracts light and provides the color with a velvety depth that beautifully imitates suede," she adds. Finally, apply a little cuticle oil to the nail beds—just ensure that the polish is completely dry and set to avoid dulling the matte finish. "Well-hydrated cuticles enhance the overall look, but it's crucial not to disturb that soft suede texture," Choi explains.
