Lifeless Skin? This French Face Mask is More Effective Than an Oxygen Facial—My Pictures are Evidence.
While it may seem obvious, oxygen is essential for maintaining healthy, radiant skin. You probably know that your body requires oxygen to function, but in the realm of skincare, oxygen plays a crucial role in cellular renewal, collagen synthesis, and hydration, all of which contribute to a plump, vibrant, and glowing complexion. Oxygen typically reaches skin cells through blood circulation, allowing it to perform its functions; however, sometimes the skin requires a little extra assistance to kickstart this process, particularly in the presence of pollution, oxidative stress, and aging factors. This is where oxygen facials come in, delivering concentrated molecules directly into the pores to enhance skin cell regeneration. The results are immediate, making them great for pre-event preparation.
However, the renowned French beauty label Biologique Recherche (famous for its cult favorite P50 toner) has introduced a different method. Rather than providing oxygen directly to the skin's surface, its newly reformulated VIP O2 line aids the skin in better utilizing the oxygen it already possesses—acting like an at-home oxygen facial that offers prolonged benefits beyond the typical 48-hour period. I've personally been using this updated line for 36 days, and my skin has never appeared more vibrant. Move over, P50—VIP O2 is the collection I'm excited to talk about.
What Is the Biologique Recherche VIP O2 Range? Initially launched in 1998, the VIP O2 line focuses on mitochondria (the cell's powerhouse), where oxygen is converted into energy. "When mitochondria don't function properly, overall cellular activity is disrupted. Energy production declines, biological signals become misregulated, and metabolism becomes less effective. This is clinically seen as dull, uneven skin with irregular texture, reduced radiance, and less hydration," explains Hélène Huguet, PhD, the brand's global VP of research and development in a Q&A.
So, how can skincare enhance mitochondrial function? The answer is melatonin. While commonly known as the hormone that promotes sleep, melatonin is also naturally found in the skin and is recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. "In addition to these protective benefits, melatonin plays a crucial role in regulating mitochondria," shares Huguet, noting that it aids mitochondria in utilizing more oxygen, essentially energizing the cells. This is why the new VIP O2 range features a patented melatonin complex and two additional bioactives in each of the four products: Lait VIP O2, a lightweight cleansing milk; Masque VIP O2, a thick, moisturizing mask; Crème Contour des Yeux VIP O2, a brightening eye cream; and Crème VIP O2, a silky moisturizer.
How I Use the Collection The cleanser is straightforward: Massage two pumps onto dry skin to remove stubborn makeup and sunscreen, then rinse with cool water for a clear complexion. However, the mask is where the magic truly happens (in my opinion). The gentle, kaolin-based formula contains no exfoliants, yet it leaves my skin looking as if I just had a light enzyme peel—so bright and dewy. (That’s cellular oxygenation in action!) After cleansing, I generously apply the mask to my face and neck and wait about 15 minutes before rinsing it off with a soft muslin cloth and cool water. A helpful tip: Biologique Recherche products don’t require heat or steam because their formulas are active enough to stimulate blood circulation. I then apply a small amount of eye cream before sealing in moisture with a lightweight emulsion cream. That’s it—aside from sunscreen, which I apply after everything dries. Despite not using special brightening serums or ampoules, my complexion has a dewy, halo effect, prompting several people to ask if I've had an Aquagold treatment (a procedure involving superficial microneedling with micro-Botox). Yes, truly.
I was also fortunate enough to try the brand’s VIP O2 Booster, a professional treatment that amplifies the mask's oxygenating effects. This treatment has a foamy, bubbly texture that crackles upon application (similar to Pop Rocks), but it doesn’t feel irritating—just a slight warming sensation as it contacts the skin. After the facial, my skin looked glass-like for several days; a fellow beauty editor even inquired about what I was testing—now that’s a sign of something effective! I will be sure to stock up once the Booster is available for consumers.
My Experience and Results Initially, I found the range somewhat unassuming. I doubted that a milky cleanser, thick moisturizing mask, and hydrating cream could address all my skin concerns, but I now enjoy the most even-toned complexion I've ever had. Once I delved into the science, it became clear how melatonin works diligently at the cellular level to "awaken" my skin from its tired, dull state. I have long struggled with a lackluster
