I believed this pant trend was definitely over until I spotted J.Law sporting it with those boots.
After almost ten years of covering fashion, I've developed a solid instinct for what trends are in and which ones are on their way out. Most of the time, I can predict when a trend is fading and another is about to take over long before it becomes common knowledge. However, I'm not infallible, and there are occasions when I misjudge the situation. A recent example is when I thought split-hem pants would soon be left behind. Four years ago, I frequently wore split-hem leggings and jeans. Everyone in the fashion scene was doing the same, and I still occasionally see them on the streets of New York City or in stylish Instagram posts. For the most part, though, these bottoms have been replaced by newer styles like cigarette jeans and low-rise trousers. I was nearly ready to declare them obsolete—until I noticed how Jennifer Lawrence styled a pair of split-hem pants for a date night with her husband, Cooke Maroney, in Los Angeles.
WHO: Jennifer Lawrence
For their evening out, Lawrence donned an entirely brown ensemble featuring a leather blazer, brown split-hem pants, and pointed-toe ankle boots, which are undoubtedly the most stylish option to pair with those pants. Choosing the right shoes to wear with split-hem pants is challenging, which likely explains why these bottoms were on the verge of falling out of fashion before Lawrence came to their rescue. The high slit at the ankle requires the perfect footwear to highlight the detail without causing an awkward look. Ankle boots need to have a sufficiently high shaft to prevent a gap between the skin and the top of the shoes. Heels and flats can exacerbate the issue, as they expose even more skin. On the other hand, knee-high boots often appear too bulky given the fitted style of these pants. It’s indeed a dilemma, but one that can be solved. Pointed-toe ankle boots with a higher shaft help elongate the leg while avoiding any unsightly gaps. My top choice? Khaite's Nevada Boots are certainly an investment, but they're ultimately the only ankle boots you'll ever need. Just saying.
