As Fashion Editors, here are the outdated trends we’re bypassing this winter.
Among all the seasons, winter is the time of year when my closet is genuinely overflowing. The coats that I previously stored away in boxes, along with the hats and gloves that have accumulated over time, now require a designated spot for easy access. This necessitates stricter rules about what stays and what goes. If I plan to keep a bulky coat that occupies a significant portion of my wardrobe, it must be worth its cost per wear and versatile enough. As I made these tough choices this season, I enlisted the help of my trusted fashion editors to help determine which styles are worth keeping this year and which items I might be too attached to.
Has anyone experienced “closet blindness”? I certainly have. It’s that sensation when you scan your beloved items, and a coat that you haven't worn in a while catches your eye, compelling you to keep it just because of its price or a specific memory associated with it. I'm not suggesting you discard everything and start fresh, but even just moving something to the back of your closet or into a box will significantly enhance how quickly you can get dressed in the morning. Speaking of items we’re not particularly fond of right now, let’s hear from six editors on what it’s time to part ways with.
OUT: Super-Chunky Lug-Sole Boots
IN: Streamlined, Low-Profile Boots
"I'm opting to set aside my super-chunky lug-sole boots this season in favor of sleek, low-profile alternatives. By the way, if it’s extremely cold or snowy, I’ll be reaching for my Uggs anyway."
OUT: Puffer Vests
IN: Fair Isle Cardigans
"While puffer vests might be handy on the ski slopes, I’m not keen on seeing them worn in other settings lately. I much prefer the cozy après-ski vibe of Fair Isle cardigans. They look fantastic with a miniskirt and suede knee-high boots."
OUT: Loud Statement Bags
IN: Rich, Minimalist Styles
"I previously thought a striking handbag was the perfect way to make a statement on winter days when I’m all bundled up. Although I enjoyed that look for a time, I've come to realize that loud statement bags tend to overshadow my winter outfits. Lately, I find myself drawn to more minimalist handbags—just swapping my bag has shifted my style from a Lower East Side vibe to an Upper East Side aesthetic. They allow the rest of my outfit to speak for itself and make everything I wear appear more luxurious."
OUT: Chunky Check-Print Scarves
IN: Faux-Fur Scarves
"While chunky check-print scarves are charming, this winter I’m choosing to replace them with something a tad more luxurious: faux-fur scarves. This trend has been quietly emerging recently, spotted on the shoulders and bags of fashion insiders in Berlin, Paris, and New York City. What I love most about them isn't just the warmth they provide; it’s how they can instantly elevate an outfit. The texture, volume, and subtle hint of glamour make even the simplest look feel thoughtfully styled."
OUT: Crewneck Sweaters
IN: Boatneck Sweaters
"Though crewneck sweaters will always have a spot in my winter wardrobe, I’m leaning toward more intriguing silhouettes this season, such as boatneck sweaters."
OUT: Scarf Coats
IN: High-Neck Coats
"Controversial opinion? The scarf-coat trend feels outdated, but I do appreciate a bold collar. This season, you won’t find me in a scarf coat; I’ll be sporting a high-neck coat, like many fashionistas in NYC. It’s elegant, chic, and carries an air of mystery, and I’m planning my entire winter wardrobe around this silhouette that hugs the chin. You can achieve the full high-collar effect by pairing it with dark-rinse denim and any of this season's sweater trends (hello, Fair Isle knits). Goodbye scarf coats—2026 marks the rise of the funnel-neck."
