Clean. Crisp. Airy. Effortless. If these descriptors resonate with you when choosing a new signature fragrance, I highly suggest considering a fragrance essence. Indeed, it exists, and no, it doesn’t possess the milky consistency of a glass-skin toner; however, it shares some similarities with skincare, particularly in regards to layering—but more on that later. For now, know that I’ve been using one for 32 days, and I’m quite impressed by the myriad of "Wait, you smell amazing" compliments I've received. With a rapidly growing market (thanks to #PerfumeTok) that becomes ever more saturated, it truly takes a lot to spark my enthusiasm for something new, yet that's precisely how I feel about No Fragrance Fragrance, the scent essence from the No Makeup Makeup line. Soft and akin to skin, this advanced formula has become my underrated choice for a refined, nontraditional winter fragrance. Ready to explore an essence of your own?       No Fragrance Fragrance Skin-Responsive Essence

What Is a Fragrance Essence? Similar to the milky toners you might apply, fragrance essences are airy, lightweight formulas that evolve and adjust to your skin’s chemistry, creating a fragrance unique to you. This concept is akin to a skin scent, which has a subtle "your skin, but better" effect; however, the essence incorporates functional, high-tech ingredients that enable your skin to respond to each specific note. "Most skin scents are structured to smell like skin, but they’re still perfumes based on fixed formulas," explains Victoria Jackson, co-founder of No Makeup Makeup. The No Fragrance Fragrance blend, on the other hand, utilizes FlexScent technology that allows the formula to change and settle differently, expressing floral, earthy, musky, or lightly fruity notes based on the wearer. Since the scent interacts so closely with the skin, it’s also infused with Givaudan’s My Z-Biome, a novel fragrance technology that ensures perfumes are gentle on the delicate skin microbiome.

Just like a skincare essence, which is a bit more emollient than a toner yet lighter than a serum, the fragrance essence serves as a middle ground between body mists and eau de toilettes. Bright top notes such as peony, pink pomelo, and green muguet (lily of the valley) create a fresh, uplifting opening—one that’s never overwhelming, even if you apply liberally—but the aforementioned FlexScent technology prevents the formula from diminishing by releasing new layers according to the time of day, environment, and your body temperature. For instance, warm ambrette transforms from fruity to amber as your skin heats up, while sheer jasmine alternates between light and intense, depending on where you are. "You get a fragrance that feels incredibly light yet reveals new dimensions throughout the day as it becomes part of you," adds Kim Wileman, CEO and co-founder of the brand.

      How to Apply It

Your skin activates the formula, so be sure to spray No Fragrance Fragrance directly onto your bare pulse points instead of spritzing your clothing or employing the "spray and walk" technique. Feel free to apply generously! The hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested formula is safe for sensitive skin (thanks to the My Z-Biome technology) and is delightfully lightweight. It has a subtle projection that sits beautifully on the skin, no matter how much you use.

Typically, skincare essences are applied between your cleansing and serum steps to prepare your skin for subsequent products and boost absorption. While the fragrance essence isn’t explicitly designed to enhance the performance of other perfumes, it does provide an excellent foundation for fragrance layering. Jackson remarks, "If you enjoy layering, it can add depth to florals, warmth to woods, and a clean sensuality to musks."

      My Experience

I’ve been wearing No Fragrance Fragrance for over a month—on its own and layered with other beloved perfumes—and the word I’d choose to describe it is "crisp." It feels cozy and fresh with an unexpected zing. On me, the notes of orris root, jasmine, and musk truly stand out, forming a delicate dry-down that has prompted many to ask how I smell so wonderful, not what fragrance I’m wearing—including my husband, who specifically commented that I smelled "really clean." I’m eager to discover how it reacts to my skin in warmer weather (perhaps I’ll notice more hints of amber coconut), but I certainly appreciate a clean, airy fragrance during winter. It feels soft and familiar, akin to wrapping yourself in an airy cashmere shawl or snuggling into a freshly laundered down comforter.

That being said, I’m an avid fan of fragrance layering and I’m pleased to report that No Fragrance Fragrance serves as a fantastic base. I usually start with several spritzes
