Apple Martin has just replicated her mother's vintage Calvin Klein style from the 1996 premiere of Emma.
Imagine this: It's the summer of 1996. The Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan have secured yet another NBA championship victory, and the Summer Olympics are getting underway in Atlanta, Georgia. In just a few months, the Spice Girls will unveil their first album, while on Friends, Ross and Rachel are about to agree that they need to take a break (sort of). As if that weren't enough, the film adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, Emma, has just premiered, with Gwyneth Paltrow attending the New York City event alongside her brother, Jake, and her parents, actress Blythe Danner, and director/producer Bruce Paltrow. For the occasion, she donned a classic little black dress by Calvin Klein.
Like today's fashion, the style of '96 favored minimalism, and Paltrow's scoop-neck, sleeveless gown was understated yet casually elegant, featuring a fitted silhouette and a floor-length hem. She kept her accessories to a minimum, opting for only simple diamond studs and black satin sandals, finishing the look with a satin clutch and dark red lipstick.
Fast forward nearly two decades, and Paltrow's Emma premiere outfit would seamlessly fit into 2025—this time, on her 21-year-old daughter. Apple Martin accompanied her mother to the New York City premiere of Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, and wore the exact same Calvin Klein dress that Paltrow had in her early 20s. The entire look was styled by Paltrow's stylist, Elizabeth Saltzman, paying tribute to both her mother's film career and her celebrated '90s street and red carpet fashion. Martin even styled her hair like Paltrow, with a casual updo and loose strands framing her face.

The little black dress is one of Paltrow's most iconic pieces, alongside her baby-pink Ralph Lauren gown from the 1999 Academy Awards, where she won an Oscar for her role in Shakespeare in Love. Let’s not forget when she wore (and later revisited in 2021) the memorable red velvet Tom Ford Gucci suit at the 1996 MTV VMAs. No one does it quite like her—except, of course, her daughter.
