I Waste Too Much Time on TikTok—My "Research" Indicates That These 7 Fashion Trends Will Be Popular in 2026.
As someone who spends a lot of time online, I must admit that TikTok has become a major source of inspiration for trends. From DIY wall-panelling hacks I’ll probably never try to songs that go viral overnight, the app provides an endless flow of creativity and ideas that I save for later. Consequently, I’ve spent countless hours on the app, but with so many trends to explore and adorable dog videos to enjoy, it’s difficult to disengage. The only downside is that TikTok's fashion cycle moves incredibly quickly. If you take just a week off, you could easily miss an aesthetic that has emerged, gained traction, and faded away within that span of time. Therefore, distinguishing timeless wardrobe essentials from fleeting trends can feel like a full-time job. Thankfully, it actually is part of my full-time job, and for this particular research project, I enlisted help. Flo Palmer, a trend researcher and TikTok expert, whose feed is filled with fantastic shopping finds and styling tips, has graciously assisted in analyzing the fashion developments on the app as we approach 2026.
And I have some promising news. Fashion on the runways and TikTok are set to converge, and in the next year, we can expect a strong emphasis on boho styles. Since Chemena Kamali returned to French fashion house Chloé as creative director in 2023, the spirited essence of the '70s has begun to influence our wardrobes. However, those attuned to TikTok can anticipate something slightly edgier: bohemia with an “indie-chic, grunge twist.” Drawing from the raw beauty looks and styling of the '90s “anti-fashion” movement, championed by Kate Moss, as well as the early 2000s that showcased the iconic street style of boho queen Sienna Miller, this aesthetic stands in stark contrast to the polished clean girl and quiet luxury trends we've seen recently. From Napoleon jackets (a staple of Moss's '90s Glastonbury outfits) to backward Kangol hats, the emerging pieces exude a carefree vibe, full of personal style and playful textures rather than a generic polished finish.
Interestingly, while the most eagerly awaited runways (like Chloé’s spring/summer 2025 show that attracted millions of viewers on social media) featured Parisian softness and whimsical nostalgia, the TikTok fashion community is embracing a somewhat edgier approach. Palmer predicts the return of “intense hardware detailing, leather, and plenty of laces,” with the most fashion-forward individuals pairing their “pretty, flouncy sheers with bolder colors, paisley prints, and floral tapestries.” In essence, this is boho with an attitude. While layered tops and cargo-belt bags aren’t drastically different from past styles, they signify a craving for originality, with an emphasis on personal expression rather than overarching aesthetics. The overall vibe feels reminiscent of Serena Van Der Woodsen from Gossip Girl—it’s a bit messy and chaotic but undeniably stylish. Naturally, some of TikTok’s top influencers inherently capture this evolution. For instance, Romy Mars and Alix Earle: their followers are drawn to their effortlessly edgy styles and authentic looks.
For those preferring a more simplified approach, ‘90s minimalism is on offer. Instead of buying new items, it’s the minor tweaks (and clever styling techniques) that will shape the year. Palmer recommends practical tips like “tucking your hair into your collar (in the iconic Carolyn Bessette Kennedy style), slipping your jeans into your boots, accessorizing your scarves with jewelry, or popping your collar for a funnel-neck silhouette.” These budget-friendly strategies create a more polished look. Meanwhile, maximalists are experimenting with bolder choices. Instead of relying solely on vibrant colors and striking patterns, they’re opting for a more eclectic mix, layering different textures and fabrics. Whether it’s “fur with sheer fabrics, denim paired with sheers, or embellishments complemented by fringe,” Palmer highlights the importance of contrasting colors and materials. For instance, today’s faux fur maintains its '80s old-money roots yet comes with much more personality. In 2026, expect to see looks that are messier, bolder, and more expressive than ever.
After delving into trends with Palmer, the TikTok fashion predictions for 2026 are straightforward. They don’t represent massive shifts in the cultural landscape but rather subtle changes that bring a cohesive “now” vibe to your ensemble. They feel personal and provide others with insight into your identity based on your presentation. Always ahead of the game, many of my favorite fashion influencers are early adopters, already showing us how easy it is to incorporate 2026 TikTok fashion trends today. Scroll down to discover the trends we’ll all be embracing over the next year.
