It's Official: '80s Nail Art Has Made a Comeback—17 Stylish Designs Reviving This "Outdated" Trend
Everyone has a decade they wish they could return to. "I wish I had been born in the '70s," my best friend frequently remarks—she even got a baby blue Volkswagen Beetle when we turned 16 to show her love for that era. While I admired her retro taste in music and quirky car, I always argued in favor of the vibrant shoulder pads, synth-driven music, and vibrant eye makeup of the '80s. "I wish I could have been a teenager in the '80s," I'd respond, usually earning a scrunched nose in response. Beauty critics from later decades have labeled '80s beauty trends as over-the-top: too loud, too colorful, too infused with ozone-depleting Aqua Net. To that, I say, "Gag me with a spoon"—the '80s was undeniably the most liberated, expressive, and unabashedly fabulous decade for beauty in history (in my opinion). I'd do almost anything to blast Mötley Crüe while perfecting a perm from four decades ago. Although I didn't experience the glamorous decade of music, fashion, and pop culture that my parents did, I’m excited to see its undeniable resurgence in today's beauty scene. I watched in amazement as '80s-inspired styles and beauty elements dominated this year's trends—from Yves Saint Laurent's S/S 26 show to insights from trendsetters. I particularly honed in on the latter, as seen on my Pinterest boards.
Yves Saint Laurent S/S 26 (Image credit: Launchmetrics) "The '80s celebrated color, confidence, and fearless self-expression," celebrity manicurist Pattie Yankee tells Who What Wear. She notes that the "fearless energy" of that bold era is making a comeback—albeit in a more refined manner. "Nowadays, we're witnessing a revival of bold individuality through fashion, beauty, and especially nails," she adds. "Vibrant colors, graphic designs, and statement pieces add instant joy and empowerment, infusing any look with a sense of fun." From zebra nails at Bronx and Banco's S/S 26 show to cheetah prints on Hailey Bieber's nails, I've collected too many photos of '80s-inspired nail art to keep to myself (and to further my goal of reviving this era of style). Blame it on the recent (partial) release of Stranger Things season 5, but these trends are back, whether anyone likes it or not. Ahead, discover 17 nail ideas that feel like they stepped right out of a John Hughes film—with a contemporary twist, of course.
'80s-Inspired Nail Ideas
**Stripe Tease**
I can't help but echo celebrity manicurist Holly Falcone in naming this set "stripe tease"—it's just perfect. To update the "dated" look of zebra-print nails, try drawing the black stripes over a clear nail. This adds a touch of modernity and edge for 2025.
**Modern Pearl**
Celebrity manicurist Iram Shelton might call this set "frosted," but it closely resembles the pearlescent trend that thrived in the '80s. "I’d love to see the pearl finish make a comeback!" jokes fellow celebrity nail artist Sonya Meesh. To achieve this look, follow up with a pearl top coat like this reflective option from Le Mini Macaron.
**Discotheque**
This design by Falcone employs a similar statement-over-clear approach seen in her zebra stripe set. While it might initially remind you of '70s disco, this design feels like something straight from an MTV music video.
**Glamazon**
The fashion and beauty trends of the '80s weren’t exactly understated, and these jewel-encrusted nails are a fantastic way to channel that glamour into 2025. Recreate this look with a dance floor–inspired set that perfectly fits the all-or-nothing vibe of that vibrant decade. (I'm personally adding this specific set to my cart right now!)
**Muted Animal Print**
There’s something about this zebra set that feels very 2025. Perhaps it’s the short nail shape or the muted neutral base polish, but this set confirms one thing: Zebra may be a relic of the past, but it’s ready to eclipse leopard today. "I love animal prints because they’re nostalgic yet can be easily modernized in 2025 with a subtle twist," says Try using softer, blurred lines instead of harsh edges or a muted color palette.
**Velvet Dots**
"Glitter nails were another favorite of the '80s, but today’s version feels more sophisticated," explains Yankee. "Choose high-quality, holographic glitter polishes for a prism-like effect." Velvet nails have emerged as a trendy alternative in 2025, offering a refined twist on a classic look. "Finely milled sparkle adds a touch of grown-up magic—steering clear
