I’ve never been particularly into denim, but these 7 trends have persuaded me to give it a try.

As we welcome the new year, it's time for a little honesty: I’ve never been particularly fond of denim. While I absolutely appreciate well-tailored trousers and can easily fall in love with a sleek satin pair or corduroy, I’ve never felt that natural attraction to jeans like the French girls we admire or the stylish Scandinavian women we aspire to be. That was until I discovered the major denim trends for 2026. As a fashion writer, it’s my responsibility to not only keep up with current trends but also to stay ahead of what styles will capture popular interest in the coming months. Although discussions about 2026 denim trends may not become mainstream until January, I’ve already been immersed in this topic for weeks. Typically, denim isn't a focus of mine, given my inclination toward other types of bottoms. Yet, after previewing new season collections, witnessing designer launches first-hand on the spring/summer 2026 runway, and interviewing industry experts who work closely with denim, I am now convinced that I need to incorporate it into my wardrobe.

“The flexibility of denim has made it a staple in wardrobes,” shares Courtney Zheng, founder and designer of her eponymous ready-to-wear label. “It’s practical, durable, and has a rich cultural history, spanning from workwear to subculture to high fashion. It marries function and style in a way few materials can, and its treatment (fading, fraying, distressing) only enhances its character over time.” Engaging with those deeply familiar with denim, like Sydney-based Zheng, makes it even more appealing to include it in any curated wardrobe. “[Denim] effortlessly elevates any outfit, harmonizing craftsmanship and cultural significance in a way few items can,” say Jonas Clason and Lena Patriksson Keller, the founders and designers of European denim brand Jeanerica. “As Diana Vreeland famously stated, ‘denim is the most beautiful thing since the gondola,’ and its lasting relevance exemplifies this,” they add.

So, what triggered this change in perception? Ultimately, it’s the simplicity and sophistication of the forthcoming trends that will dominate in the next year. “Looking towards 2026, I anticipate more experimentation with construction, proportions, and materials,” mentions Zheng. “Expect features like curved seams, wax finishes, over-dyed effects, and hybrid pieces such as denim cargo skirts, corsetry, and structured outerwear.” Bearing this in mind, it feels like the perfect moment to embrace denim in 2026. Fortunately, there’s a plethora of options to spark your interest. Whether you’re eager to add new styles to your denim collection or are simply curious about which shapes will be popular in the new year, continue reading for the 7 most significant denim trends that are already shaping 2026.

The 7 Biggest Denim Trends of 2026

      1. Indie Sleaze Jeans

Style Notes: Revived in the early 2020s as a counter to the isolation and conservatism brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, indie sleaze has emerged as a significant cultural reference in the wake of an era characterized by separation in fashion. Now, five years later, the period during which indie sleaze first flourished is reaching new relevance. In terms of denim, this aesthetic manifests through distressed jeans, acid-wash colors, and form-fitting silhouettes. “We’re already witnessing the early signs of a resurgence in super slim leg denim,” notes Lara Fells, creative director and co-founder of Byron Bay label St. Agni. “It’s not quite the stretchy skinny jeans we recall from the 2010s, but rather something more thoughtfully designed: straight-leg silhouettes that fit closely through the thigh, tapering cleanly to the ankle,” she explains. “The cut is streamlined yet comfortable—slim, but not tight.”

      2. Textured Finishes

Style Notes: My newfound appreciation for denim—after a long period of neglect—stems from how designers are innovating within this fabric. Denim is evolving beyond just jeans, with textiles like suede and velvet becoming fashionable choices for 2026. “We’re exploring new avenues, such as developing washes on our signature flock in corduroy and velvet, a fusion of a denim base with a luxurious viscose corduroy layer,” explain Clason and Patriksson Keller. “These innovations pave the way for fresh textures and depths. Moving forward, anticipate ultralight denims and airy constructions that provide the lightweight luxury modern wardrobes crave.”
