Everything You Need: Outfit Choices for Holiday Hosting
Tiffany Reid is an editor in residence at Who What Wear, a fashion executive, freelance stylist, and brand consultant who recently held the position of senior vice president of fashion at Bustle Digital Group. She has also launched a YouTube series called Tried + True, where she guides viewers through the latest fashion trends. This year, I have officially embraced my role as a host. I organized Thanksgiving for the first time, welcoming 30 guests, and I'm currently planning my New Year's Eve celebration to usher in 2026. One unexpected benefit of hosting is the ability to shape the event entirely, from the guest list to the menu, the music, and, above all, the dress code. It’s empowering to invite people into your home and craft a unique experience. I take great joy in seeing my friends and family enjoy themselves when I've curated the occasion for them. Hosting is less about achieving perfection and more about being intentional, which is reflected in how you present yourself and, naturally, how you dress.
While every detail is significant, I firmly believe that what you wear as a host is as crucial as the ambiance you establish. Your outfit sets the tone for the entire gathering. Often, it’s the first impression your guests will have, subtly conveying the mood—whether it's festive, relaxed, elegant, or celebratory. While being stylish is essential, comfort is also vital for a well-rounded hosting look, especially for me since I might be tending to my child while serving champagne to my guests. Regardless of whether your gathering is formal, casual, or something in between, here are some holiday hosting style tips to simplify getting dressed for your upcoming event!
1. Embrace a Bold Statement Print
Hosting is the ideal opportunity to play with fashion. Choose an animal print, a geometric motif, or a graphic floral design that instantly feels intentional and festive with minimal styling. You want to seize the spotlight—it is your celebration, after all. A bold print helps you stand out, ensures you receive the attention you deserve, and makes it easy for guests to locate you whenever they need assistance.
2. Opt for a Monochromatic Look
Wearing a single color from head to toe is a straightforward choice, whether you prefer a subtle ivory ensemble or something vibrant like red. Monochromatic outfits always exude a chic and put-together vibe. When you're managing a lengthy to-do list before your event, it’s beneficial to have an easy option to check off. This look gives the impression of more effort than it requires and demonstrates to your guests that you took the time to dress up for them.
3. Favor Cozy, Festive Knits
Comfort is crucial while hosting, and sometimes it’s the top priority. If this is your goal but you still want to look fashionable, choose cozy fabrics like cashmere, enhanced with stylish prints and embellishments. These little details keep the vibe festive and enjoyable.
4. Select Pieces You Can Move In
Since you'll be cooking, greeting guests, and tidying up—especially with kids around, which might involve a bit of lifting—it's important that your outfit allows for movement. Look for stretchy waistbands, wrap styles, and silky sets that are relaxed yet polished and easily coordinated. The ease of these looks allows you to focus on what's truly important: entertaining your guests.
5. Wear Comfortable Shoes
Pick footwear that you can wear comfortably for an extended period, such as chic flats or cozy slippers if you’re indoors. Aim for shoes that can carry you through the night without compromising style. There are many stylish options that combine the comfort of flats and slippers. You can’t go wrong with something that makes a statement while you mingle.
6. Choose Wrinkle-Resistant Fabrics
Hosting involves a lot of sitting, standing, and moving around. To counteract this, select fabrics that resist wrinkling (like velvet!) so you maintain a polished appearance throughout the evening. Velvet also gives an opulent and luxurious feel to your outfit, effortlessly enhancing the party's atmosphere without requiring extra effort.
7. Let Accessories Elevate Your Look
If your ensemble is simple, enhance it with bold earrings or an eye-catching necklace. Accessories bring character without sacrificing comfort. I refer to them as conversation starters because they often prompt guests to ask about them, which can help break the ice while socializing.
