I'm a mother of two working in NYC—here are the sweater styles I choose to look stylish at the office and beyond…
Tessa Faye O'Connell is a contributor recognized for her work with various fashion houses, focusing on media and public relations, and is currently the global PR director at Coach. As a mother of two, she is working to enhance her influence in the fashion industry through styling while also striving to leave the house on time. With winter here, dressing for work in the city presents a new challenge: facing the cold while maintaining a polished appearance. Fortunately, I have a collection of sweaters. Over the years, I've curated a wardrobe filled with items I cherish and can mix and match, leading me to favor certain styles over others. Each autumn, as I prepare for the upcoming months, I assess what I own, remove pieces that no longer serve me, and create a list of what I need to ensure I always have options that work. The great thing about sweaters is the variety of styles available to suit different moods—be it polished, relaxed, sophisticated, neutral, or featuring various prints, all of which make winter dressing enjoyable. Whether paired with jeans, trousers, skirts, or casual silk pants, there’s something for everyone.
Currently, these are my top sweater picks, but as the snow continues, I may find new favorites to add to my collection.
**The Cotton Sweater**
A cotton sweater is lighter than wool or cashmere but comfortable enough to layer over a T-shirt for the day ahead. My go-to right now is Honest Cotton's white pullover, though there are many neutral-tone cotton sweaters perfect for everyday wear.
**The Cardigan**
I used to shy away from cardigans until I discovered their versatility when worn as a top. Certain cardigans can provide a sophisticated look while keeping you warm in the office.
**The V-Neck Sweater**
I once avoided V-necks completely until I found that layering a T-shirt underneath was the key. This type of sweater is ideal for feeling cozy or looking chic with the appropriate trousers. I can't count how many times I've thrown on my Jenni Kayne V-neck to feel put together.
**The Fair Isle Sweater**
My favorite persona is the one spending a snowy day in a cozy cabin, so incorporating a Fair Isle sweater into my daily wardrobe is a win for me—cozy yet chic.
**The Brown Sweater**
A textured brown sweater is always a reliable choice.
**The Striped Sweater**
When I want to make a subtle statement, stripes are my go-to. Whether it's a cropped style or a button-down, they add just the right touch to complete an outfit.
**The Plaid Sweater**
What could be better than a plaid shirt? A plaid cashmere shirt, of course. Need I say more?
