The secret is revealed—Armani's Luminous Silk Foundation has undergone a makeover, and it's improved beyond my expectations…
On the hunt for a noncomedogenic foundation that isn’t excessively dewy or matte? Look no further than Luminous Silk. Want a natural, skin-like finish that feels as if you’re not wearing foundation? Once again, Luminous Silk takes the crown. Seeking buildable coverage that photographs beautifully and stays put until midday? I believe you know what my response will be. Armani Beauty's Luminous Silk Foundation is one of the most legendary complexion products available, cherished by makeup artists, skincare specialists, and beauty editors since its launch over 25 years ago. "It's probably my longest and most dependable relationship with a product," celebrity makeup artist Kelli Anne Sewell expressed during our WWW 100 Beauty Awards. For my wedding this year, my choice for long-wear foundation was a no-brainer—Luminous Silk, without a doubt.
Upon hearing that the brand decided to reformulate this iconic product, I, along with many other loyal users of Luminous Silk, was somewhat reluctant to part with my beloved original bottle. The previous formula was already outstanding; why change something that worked so well? Yet, after testing the upgraded Luminous Silk for several months and learning about the development process, I can confidently say that the new foundation surpasses expectations in every way. I'm not alone in this opinion. Scroll down to find out why makeup artists and even discerning Reddit users are calling it a new icon, along with my personal testing outcomes.
**The Formula**
Rest assured, the buildable, long-lasting properties of this foundation remain intact—if not improved. It now features a new "liquid silk" technology, replacing the patented "micro-fil" pigments. According to Rena Hayashi, the head of makeup R&D, this new technology delivers even better long-lasting performance. "It's a unique oil blend with advanced fillers," she explained. As the name implies, this blend creates a smooth, velvety effect that looks just like—liquid silk.
Speaking of pigments, Armani has also expanded the shade range, adding 18 new shades for a total of 44 beautiful hues. "A new green pigment has enabled us to broaden the shade range for those with olive undertones, providing a more accurate match," Hayashi clarified. "We’ve also incorporated an ultramarine blue pigment into our deeper shades to enhance luminosity and intensity in the finish. ... Each shade has a unique formulation, just as each skin tone is unique." The ingredients remain noncomedogenic, but the new formula includes additional hydrating skincare components, specifically glycerin and niacinamide. "Consumer needs are constantly evolving," Hayashi pointed out. In today’s market, skin-caring benefits are no longer seen as a bonus but rather as an expectation for makeup products. "Along with beautiful makeup finishes, consumers now expect products that are gentle on the skin," she added. However, rest assured that the luminous finish remains flawless.
**The Application and Wear Time**
What truly sets Luminous Silk apart is its weightless, filter-like finish. There’s a reason celebrity makeup artists view it as a lifesaver for red carpet events! Carolina Gonzalez, who frequently does makeup for stars like Sabrina Carpenter, Gigi Hadid, and Hailee Steinfeld, has noticed even better improvements in its finish and performance. "I found that the old formula occasionally highlighted texture," she confessed. "I typically added some powder if I felt any texture was being emphasized due to its luminous quality."
The new formula (which Gonzalez has had in her kit since July—"Lucky me!" she quipped) boasts a noticeably smoother consistency that applies seamlessly—looking like the best version of your skin. "I feel like it doesn't pick up texture in the same way," she commented. "Plus, it still feels hydrating and wears beautifully throughout the day." The new version lasts even longer than the original (if that was even possible!). "The old formula held up well, but I didn't realize the new one lasts for up to 24 hours, which is definitely an added perk," Gonzalez noted. I can personally vouch for its extra longevity—more on my experience in just a bit—and so can other users who rave about it lasting from morning until night. "I did my usual primer, setting powder, and setting spray, and this lasted until 9 p.m. when I took it off (having applied it at 6 a.m.)," shared a Reddit user.
**My Experience and Results**
As I mentioned, Luminous Silk is my go-to foundation. I wore it on my wedding day this past November, if that tells you anything about my fondness! I managed to test the secret upgrade over the summer, but it wasn't until December that I finally got my hands on a full-size product. I used it on one of my busiest workdays—a day filled with back-to-back meetings followed by a late-night holiday party—and I was hooked.
