My research has covered almost every popular ingredient, product, and technique, and I've tested a variety of new treatments. I've witnessed social media overflow with skincare advice from countless sources—content creators, brand founders, and even that old college friend who claims to have discovered the secret to flawless skin, which just so happens to be a serum she sells on the side!

One universal truth has guided me through this journey: the only way to filter out the noise and discover effective skincare advice is to consult the experts—qualified professionals who comprehend the science of skin and have years, if not decades, of hands-on experience, such as dermatologists and aestheticians.

There are plenty of outstanding experts to consult, but recently, I’ve been eager to delve into skincare topics with Ildi Pekar, a licensed aesthetician, brand founder, and head of Ildi Pekar Wellness Studio in NYC. With over 20 years as a leading skin specialist, she's often referred to as the “supermodel aesthetician” due to her impressive roster of clients, including Miranda Kerr, Irina Shayk, and Ashley Park. I finally had the chance to pose my burning questions to her, and she provided some fantastic insights. Below, find some of Pekar’s top skincare advice, from the benefits of honey-infused products to the "piano fingers" facial technique.

I grew up in Budapest, Hungary, where I learned the importance of taking care of your skin from an early age. My philosophy is straightforward: every treatment should be entirely tailored to your skin type, lifestyle, and specific needs. Some of our clients have been with us for over 20 years—visiting weekly—and they never receive the same treatment twice. I believe in honesty and building trust. When someone is on my table, they can feel assured they are in knowledgeable, caring hands.

We are always exploring new techniques and innovations while still respecting traditional, time-honored methods. It's the blend of new and old that creates the magic. The objective is simple: to help you feel good, look good, and reveal the best version of your skin.

What’s one common misconception about skincare you encounter? The most significant mistake I see is people pursuing quick results. They often use too many products or undergo multiple treatments simultaneously. Skin is a living organ and doesn’t respond well to that kind of overload. It needs rhythm, not constant change. Consistency is where the real magic lies, and the sooner you begin to respect and care for your skin, the more it will reward you over time.

Are there any specific ingredients you particularly love or wish more people incorporated into their routines? Honey. Always honey. I will always champion honey. Honey has been a staple for thousands of years, yet it still doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves. It's antibacterial, deeply hydrating, packed with enzymes and antioxidants, and incredibly versatile. You can blend it, mask with it, layer it. It should be a staple in everyone’s skincare cabinet. It's one of those timeless ingredients that modern skincare keeps trying to replace unnecessarily.

Conversely, are there any trendy ingredients you believe are overhyped? Certainly—trends come and go; that's the nature of this industry. Currently, we see a lot of ingredients like PDRN (salmon DNA), exosomes, and NAD. Let me clarify. These ingredients aren’t bad, and they can be incredibly effective when utilized properly. The problem lies not with the ingredients themselves but with how they are applied and marketed.

These are advanced, pricey ingredients that require careful sourcing, formulation, and precise storage. So when I come across a salmon DNA serum priced at $9, it raises a red flag. It often involves misleading practices or mislabeling and sets unrealistic expectations for clients. I also notice formulations that are poorly balanced—too heavy, too sticky, or loaded with too many active ingredients. This can lead to irritation, breakouts, and a compromised skin barrier.

It’s not about entirely avoiding trends; it’s about understanding them, respecting the underlying science, and using them thoughtfully and professionally.

As the supermodel aesthetician, do you have any tips for recreating that supermodel glow at home? First rule: don’t try anything new the night before an important event. Your skin should feel safe, not surprised. The night before, perform a gentle exfoliation to smooth things out. I love Sanitas Brightening Pads ($74). Then, follow with a light hydrating mask and let your skin rest.

In the morning, I don’t cleanse; I prefer
