Spring has arrived, and beauty fans are starting to identify which popular nail trends will define this season. While the spring of 2025 focused on nostalgia with eye-catching negative space designs, micro-French manicures, and coquette nails adorned with 3D decals, we anticipate the nail scene will shift again as the trend cycle evolves. Experts suggest that this year's top nail styles will appear much less "trendy" compared to previous seasons. In true Who What Wear beauty editor style, I consulted two celebrity nail artists to get the inside scoop on which nail designs will be phased out just as temperatures are rising, and what will take their place. If this sounds interesting, keep reading!

What Nail Looks Will Fall Out of Favor This Spring?

Celebrity manicurist Queenie Nguyen anticipates a pivot away from the flashy, extravagant nail styles that were prominent last spring. "You might not see trends like overly embellished 'junk nails,' thick, high-contrast French tips, large 3D elements, or extreme shapes such as ultra-sharp stilettos," Nguyen notes. Celebrity nail artist Analysse Hernandez mentions that she and her clients are trying out new designs, moving away from the gel flower nails that have been popular in the past two springs. "I appreciated how versatile and adaptable that flower design was, but my clients now seem to prefer more realistic nail art," she states. Last year's manicures featured simple, solid colors, but Hernandez clarifies that those hues (especially soft shades like butter yellow) will not make a comeback this season. "While those shades are still relevant, this year focuses on expressing individuality through design," Hernandez explains.

      What Styles Will Emerge?

Rather than reverting to last spring's bold, runway-inspired nail art, Nguyen predicts that this season’s manicures will adopt a softer and more wearable aesthetic. "Expect sheer, milky 'your nails but better' finishes, jelly nails for a more translucent effect, and micro nail art like micro French tips or subtle gems," Nguyen elaborates. She also forecasts shorter nail lengths with softer shapes like round, oval, and 'sqoval' gaining popularity this spring. Instead of the previously mentioned gel flower nails, Hernandez expects floral milk nails, featuring delicately encapsulated dried flowers within gel or acrylic, to rise in trend. "Layer with a sheer, milky shade like OPI's I'm a Bubble Bunny to achieve that soft, spring-ready 'clean girl' look," she advises. Moreover, Hernandez is noticing a rise in patterned nails showcasing playful designs such as polka dots, stripes, and gingham prints. "These styles embrace a mix of colors, textures, and creativity," adds Hernandez.

Why Will These Trends Be Gaining Momentum?

If you've observed a rise in beauty trends driven by lifestyle, you're not alone. Nguyen asserts that this season will prioritize low-maintenance, polished looks that reflect individuality and lifestyle. "Instead of recurring highly recognized, 'algorithm-driven' trends (like glazed doughnut or heavy chrome), people are leaning towards more personal, understated styles that still feel intentional and enjoyable," she mentions. "I’m excited to see more nail technicians exploring this fun space and revitalizing maximalist nails!"

For a clean, healthy shine, Nguyen recommends BIAB for a sheer, structured base that enhances natural nails. "If you're doing your nails at home, I recommend the Orly Breathable 1 Step Manicure because it combines nail care with color. A lovely spring neutral is Kiss Me, I'm Kind, which is a perfect subtle pink."

Then: Dotted Florals | Now: Polka Dots

This elegant manicure by Milan-based nail artist Oksana Zavora merges a chic cat eye design with delicate polka dot accents that reflect light beautifully. These enchanting and whimsical nails blend one of the season's trendiest colors (vintage blue) with fresh cream for a timeless, spring-inspired look.

Then: Solid Shades | Now: Ultra-Detailed

Solid pastel shades in butter yellows and vibrant oranges may not hold as much popularity this spring, but experts predict an increase in bright spring nail colors accented with sophisticated details. Evidently, Y2K-inspired designs are still relevant, highlighted by these almond nails created by Stafford-based nail artist Stephanie Holland.

Then: Big Elements | Now: Tiny Touches

The oversized 3D designs are officially out, with a renewed focus on subtle details to enhance mismatched manicures. This nail look arises from a freestyle blend of styles with elements like animal print, diffused auras, minimalist metals, elegant chrome French tips, and faux nail piercings. The 3D embellishments are "tiny," yet they significantly enhance the overall appearance.

      Then: Fashion-Driven | Now: Versatile

As Nguyen explains, other minimalist manicures will focus on enhancing natural nails for a "your nails, but better" appearance using sheer
