Apologies, but florals and pastels—celebrity nail artists are replacing outdated designs with these 6 spring manicures.

Spring is upon us, and beauty fans are starting to anticipate which nail trends will make a mark this season. Last year’s spring trends focused on nostalgia with bold negative space designs, micro-French manicures, and coquette nails decorated with 3D decals. However, this season, we can expect another transformation in the nail space as trends continue to evolve. Experts suggest that the top nail looks this time will appear noticeably less "trendy" compared to earlier styles. In true Who What Wear beauty editor style, I consulted two celebrity nail artists for insights on which nail designs are fading out as we welcome warmer weather, along with what will take their place. If you're curious, keep reading!

What Nail Looks Are Falling Out of Favor This Spring?

Celebrity manicurist Queenie Nguyen anticipates a move away from the maximalist, high-drama nails that were popular last spring. "Trends you likely won't see include overly embellished 'junk nails', thick, high-contrast French tips, large 3D elements, or extreme shapes like ultra-sharp stilettos," Nguyen explains. Celebrity nail artist Analysse Hernandez notes that she and her clients have been exploring new designs, moving away from the gel flower nails that were prevalent in the past two years. "I appreciate how adaptable and versatile these flowers were in nail sets, but I sense my clients are leaning toward more realistic nail art now," she adds. While last year's manicures embraced simple, solid colors, Hernandez says these straightforward shades, particularly soft tones like butter yellow, won’t be making a comeback this season. "Although those colors are still relevant, this year will focus on expressing personality through design," Hernandez elaborates.

      What Will Replace Them?

Instead of reverting to the bold, runway-inspired nail art and bright citrus colors of last spring, Nguyen predicts that this season's manicures will be softer and more wearable. "Consider sheer, milky 'your nails but better' finishes, jelly nails for a translucent effect, and micro nail art like micro French tips or understated gems," Nguyen continues. She also expects shorter lengths with softer shapes such as round, oval, and 'sqoval' nails to be in vogue this spring. Instead of the previously mentioned gel flower nails, Hernandez anticipates that floral milk nails, featuring delicate encapsulations of dried flowers in gel or acrylic, will gain popularity. "Layer with a sheer, milky shade like OPI’s I'm a Bubble Bunny to achieve a soft, spring-ready 'clean girl' aesthetic," she explains. Hernandez is also noticing an increase in patterned nails with fun designs like polka dots, stripes, and gingham patterns. "These styles celebrate a mix of colors, textures, and creativity," Hernandez notes.

Why Are These Trends Gaining Popularity?

If you've noted a rise in beauty trends inspired by lifestyle, you're not alone. Nguyen mentions that this season’s manicures will prioritize low-maintenance polished looks that highlight individuality and lifestyle. "Instead of repeating recognizable, 'algorithm-driven' trends (such as glazed doughnut or heavy chrome), people are favoring personal, understated styles that still feel deliberate and enjoyable," she says. "I’m eager to see more nail techs embrace this playful space and revitalize maximalist nails!" For a smooth, healthy shine, Nguyen suggests asking for BIAB, which provides a sheer, structured base that enhances the natural nail. "If you're doing your nails at home, I recommend the Orly Breathable 1 Step Manicure as it combines nail care with color. A favored spring neutral is Kiss Me, I'm Kind, a wonderfully soft pink."

Then: Dotted Florals | Now: Polka Dots

This elegant manicure by Milan-based nail artist Oksana Zavora fuses the enchanting cat eye design with subtle polka dot accents that perfectly catch the light. These whimsical and airy nails combine one of the season's trendiest hues (vintage blue) with a crisp cream to create a versatile spring-inspired look that feels timeless.

Then: Solid Shades | Now: Ultra-Detailed

Solid pastel shades in butter yellows and lively oranges aren't expected to be as popular this spring. Still, forecasts indicate a rise in vibrant spring colors complemented by striking yet elegant details. It’s clear that Y2K-inspired styles are alive and well, as shown by the almond nails recently crafted by Stafford-based nail artist Stephanie Holland.

Then: Big Elements | Now: Tiny Touches

Maximalist oversized 3D designs are officially on their way out, paving the way for delicate details that enhance mismatched styles. This nail design resulted from a freestyle mix-and-match session, featuring animal prints, blurred auras, minimalist metals, chic chrome French tips, and faux nail piercings. The 3D elements are "tiny," yet they create a significant impact on the overall appearance.
