I've searched through all the runways and street style moments—these spring denim trends seem outdated for 2026.
I spend what some might consider an excessive amount of time watching runway shows, observing street style, and scrolling through the Instagram profiles of those whose outfits I save on a whim. Recently, I began to notice a trend—certain denim styles that used to be essentials now seemed… off. They’re not necessarily bad, but they don’t feel as relevant as they did just a year ago. This is especially true for those on-trend statement styles that were briefly popular. The good news is that the alternatives are not exceedingly impractical or trend-driven to the point of becoming outdated quickly. If anything, the denim trends for 2026 seem more refined—less forced, more deliberate, and honestly, fairly comfortable to wear. Ultimately, it boils down to personal taste, so below are the denim trends that I, as a fashion editor who has thoroughly researched, won’t be embracing this season, along with the five alternatives I'll be opting for instead.
Over It: "I Can't Breathe" Skinnies
Into It: Tailored Cigarette Styles
Skinny jeans haven’t disappeared entirely, but I won't be seen in the super-tight, vacuum-sealed versions anytime soon. They’ve felt outdated to me in recent years, even with the resurgence of 2000s fashion. Cigarette jeans are coming in as the sleek alternative, providing that similar streamlined look without the discomfort. They inherently feel more sophisticated, especially when paired with sleek flats or a sharp blazer.

Over It: Statement Colors
Into It: Crochet Denim
Bright, bold denim had its moment, but it’s beginning to feel a bit too loud for the more polished direction fashion is moving towards. Instead, texture is taking the spotlight, with crochet and embroidered denim adding a playful bohemian twist to classic blue jeans. Crochet denim, in particular, has caught my attention recently.

Over It: Kick Flare
Into It: Capri Jeans
Kick flares enjoyed a long popularity, but their somewhat awkward crop is now being replaced by something more intentional. Enter: capri jeans, which have officially made a comeback and are better than ever. The new version of capris leans towards minimalism and tailoring, often styled with heels or ballet flats for a clean and stylish silhouette. It’s a lovely nod to retro styles.

Over It: Paperbag Waist
Into It: '70s Flares
Paper-bag jeans were a trend during the height of mom jeans. They seemed like an easy way to bring a unique twist, but now I find them unflattering. The focus has shifted towards cleaner waistlines and more fluid, leg-lengthening shapes. Seventies-inspired flares provide drama without adding bulk at the waist. They elongate the legs and instantly give any outfit a more modern feel.

Over It: Ivory Jeans
Into It: Stark Whites
Ivory denim will always have its place in a wardrobe, but lately, I find that the softer tone is being replaced by crisp, stark white styles in my closet. Practical? Not really. But that hasn’t deterred me. The brighter hue feels sharper and more intentional—almost like the denim version of a fresh white button-down.
