A wardrobe basic is defined as a versatile, timeless, and functional piece that serves as the foundation for various outfits, but there are also basic trends. Each season, certain items categorized as basics gain significant popularity, often becoming the centerpiece of the outfits they are a part of. This spring, the standout basic is polo knits. Whether it’s a quarter-zip pullover or a classic button-down polo, we've seen them everywhere and noted their rapid sell-outs. When we spotted polo knits on the runway during the Chanel Métiers d'Art 2026 show, we quickly recognized its potential as a major trend this year. We’ve observed this inherently casual piece being styled in fresh ways this spring, so we decided to experiment with it in order to inspire you with chic outfit ideas featuring this versatile staple. Read on to discover why we selected it as one of our spring hero pieces.
The polo knit our associate fashion editor Nikki tried may technically be considered a school uniform item (with adult sizes, just so you know), but you'd never guess it from her styling. This budget-friendly long-sleeve polo comes in a variety of colors, which you might find yourself wanting to order in multiples by the end of this.
Nikki's thoughts on the polo knit: "I've always appreciated the preppy, sporty aesthetic of polo knits on runway models and fashion enthusiasts in the streets, yet I’ve never added one to my collection until now. This Lands' End polo shirt is the perfect way to explore the trend without a hefty cost. It features a classic polo silhouette with a collar and two buttons. While the fit resembles an oversized long-sleeve shirt, it has a weighted quality similar to that of a sweatshirt. At just $35, it's a fantastic deal, making it easy to justify purchasing a few shades. The true red is versatile and timeless, while the royal purple and butter yellow are incredibly chic and feel very 2026."
Styling tips: The most modern way to wear a polo knit is by layering it. In this case, it’s styled with a white crewneck tee peeking out from under the collar. To elevate the basic, pair it with dark-wash jeans, kitten heels, and a large-buckle belt. Simple.

Fashion insiders are fond of basics adorned with logos, and our senior branded content editor Aniyah tried a trendy Sporty & Rich rugby-stripe polo knit—a particularly athletic interpretation of the trend. Keep reading to see the stylish outfit it complements and learn more about the knit.
Aniyah's thoughts on the polo knit: "Some trends pique my excitement more than others, and the emergence of polo knits is definitely one of those. Growing up in Florida, polos and collared shirts have always been staples in my closet, and I'm excited to sport them again in a major way. This Sporty & Rich sweater is made from a cashmere-and-wool blend, providing warmth without any itchiness. I love the contrasting white collar, the gray-and-navy color scheme, and the 'thick yet lightweight' sensation of this sweater. Although I typically prefer thinner stripes, the bolder stripes made it easy for me to incorporate a different kind of pattern by wrapping another sweater around my waist. This outfit exudes 'preppy but updated for 2026.' I can envision numerous ways to remix this ensemble for the spring. On warmer days, I'll swap the jeans and loafers for longline shorts and kitten heels. I also like the idea of styling the sweater around my waist or neck to highlight the contrast between the stripes and colors."
Styling tips: Two polo knits are better than one—don't you agree? Aniyah's outfit consists entirely of basics, but the splash of color from the polo knit tied around her waist enhances the rugby polo, straight-leg jeans, and soft black leather loafers, giving it that fashion-editor flair.
