A wardrobe basic is defined as a versatile, classic, and functional item that serves as the base of numerous outfits. However, basic trends do exist. Certain items each season gain immense popularity and often become the centerpiece of the outfits they are part of. This spring, the buzz-worthy basic is the polo knit. Whether it’s a quarter-zip pullover or a traditional buttoned polo, we’ve spotted them everywhere and noticed they’re flying off the shelves. When polo knits appeared on the runway at the Chanel Métiers d'Art 2026 show, we quickly knew it would be a major trend this year. We're observing this inherently casual piece being styled in increasingly innovative ways this spring, so we decided to showcase cool outfit ideas featuring this versatile staple. Read on to discover why we selected it as one of our spring must-haves.
The polo knit that our associate fashion editor Nikki tried may be traditionally associated with school uniforms (available in adult sizes), but its styling here says otherwise. This budget-friendly long-sleeve polo comes in a variety of colors, which you might find tempting to collect after seeing it styled.
Nikki's thoughts on the polo knit: "I’ve always appreciated the preppy, sporty vibe of polo knits worn by models on the runway and stylish individuals on the streets, but for some reason, I never included one in my wardrobe until now. This Lands' End polo shirt offers a perfect opportunity to embrace the trend without making a large investment. It features a classic polo design with a collar and two buttons. Despite its oversized fit similar to long-sleeve shirts, it has a substantial feel akin to a sweatshirt. Priced at just $35, it’s an excellent deal, making it easy to justify purchasing multiple colors. The true red is both versatile and timeless, while the royal purple and butter yellow are simply chic and feel very 2026."
Styling suggestions: The most modern way to style a polo knit is through layering. In this instance, it’s worn over a white crewneck tee, with the collar peeking out. To elevate the basic, pair it with dark-wash jeans, kitten heels, and a large-buckle belt. Simple and stylish.

Fashion enthusiasts appreciate basic pieces with logos, and our senior branded content editor Aniyah tried a trendy Sporty & Rich rugby-stripe polo knit—an especially sporty take on the style. Continue reading to see the chic outfit it complements and to learn more about the knit.
Aniyah's perspective on the polo knit: "Some trends excite me more than others, and the emergence of polo knits is one of them. Growing up in Florida, polos and collared shirts have always been staples in my wardrobe, and I’m thrilled to bring them back in style. This Sporty & Rich sweater, made from a cashmere-wool blend, is warm without being itchy. I particularly love the contrasting white collar, the combination of gray and navy, and the 'thick but not heavy' feel of this sweater. I usually prefer thinner stripes, but the broader stripes in this design enabled me to play with a different pattern by tying another sweater around my waist. This outfit conveys 'preppy but with a modern twist for 2026.' I can envision many ways to remix this look for the spring, such as swapping the jeans and loafers for longline shorts and kitten heels. I also like the idea of styling this sweater around my waist or neck to enhance the contrast of stripes and colors."
Styling tips: Two polo knits are better than one—isn’t that right? Aniyah’s outfit consists solely of basics, yet the burst of color from the polo knit tied around her waist adds an edge to the rugby polo, straight-leg jeans, and soft black leather loafers.
