Grab a Cup of Coffee and a Takeout Menu: 12 Ways to Enjoy a Gilmore Girls Autumn

While all four seasons appear in the series, Gilmore Girls is undoubtedly a show that embodies fall. This is largely because many of its most memorable episodes occur during this season. Who could forget the moment in season 1 when Rory runs through the town square, decorated with pumpkins, after kissing Dean for the first time, and then shares all the details with Lane while wearing pilgrim costumes? The series also exudes strong back-to-school vibes, thanks to numerous scenes of Rory at Chilton and Yale. Even episodes set outside the autumn months maintain that warm, nostalgic feel that embodies fall.

It’s the ultimate comfort watch, and each year, with the first hint of crisp autumn air, I love to settle in front of the TV and immerse myself in the world of Stars Hollow. However, this fall, I'm going beyond my usual rewatch and looking for ways to bring those cozy Gilmore Girls vibes into my real life. Here’s how you can have a Gilmore Girls fall:

      1. Host a movie night

In the Gilmore household, movie night is a cherished tradition. There are always several rental films on the agenda, abundant snacks, and, as Lorelai tells Luke, "no talking during the movie, no exceptions" (though they almost always end up chatting through it). To recreate this experience, organize a movie night featuring comfy blankets, a bounty of junk food on the coffee table, and classic films like Casablanca and Pippi Longstocking.

      2. Rediscover your love for reading

Rory is known for carrying a book wherever she goes, and if it’s been a while since you picked up one, fall is the ideal time to dive back in. Visit your local bookstore or library to choose a new release that excites you or select a cozy read to curl up with. For an extra dose of nostalgia, challenge yourself with Rory's actual reading list from the show and see how many you can get through. You might take a while to finish all 500+ books mentioned in the series, but you'll have plenty of material on your reading list all season long.

      3. Find your "third place"

Throughout the series, it seems Lorelai and Rory spend more time at Luke’s Diner than in their own home. They essentially defined the concept of a “third place,” a spot beyond home or work where you can regularly visit and connect with others. While I’m not suggesting you dine at the same restaurant daily, the idea is worth exploring. Your third place might be a nearby coffee shop, a local library, a neighborhood park, or even your usual gym. The goal is to find a spot that offers the same sense of comfort and familiarity as Luke’s does in the show.

      4. Take a spontaneous road trip

A spontaneous road trip is quintessential Lorelai energy and a perfect addition to your fall bucket list. No need for a pro/con list—just jump in the car (with a coffee in hand, of course) and drive until you discover something enjoyable. Stop at a roadside diner, find a charming small town with shopping, or simply appreciate the scenery along the way. You might even turn it into an overnight adventure by booking a cozy bed-and-breakfast. Think of it as Lorelai and Rory’s road trip to visit Harvard, minus the broken engagement and the creepy cat-themed inn.

      5. Broaden your takeout options

Lorelai’s seemingly endless takeout budget is one of those quirks of the show that’s always curious, yet you have to admire her and Rory’s ability to consume enough food for a family of six. If your typical takeout orders are starting to feel dull, emulate their adventurous spirit and try something new. Order a variety of entrees from a restaurant, or explore a new place you haven't tried before. Even if it turns out to be a disappointment like International Grab Bag Night at Al’s Pancake World, the experience of trying something different is half the fun.

      6. Emulate Lorelai and Rory’s fall fashion

While some elements of Gilmore Girls may not have aged well (particularly the lack of diversity and Rory’s problematic relationship patterns), much of the wardrobe still holds up after 20 years. From Rory’s chunky knit sweaters to Lorelai’s impressive collection of coats and the graphic tees they both sometimes wear, these are all styles I'd happily sport in 2025. So, if you're seeking fall fashion inspiration, look no further.

      7. Perfect your coffee order

Not everyone can consume black coffee around the clock like the Gilmores do. If your coffee taste is more refined and you haven’t yet discovered your ideal order, make it your mission this fall to find your perfect cup. Whether you’re ordering from a café or brewing at home, experiment with different coffee blends, syrups, creamers, and other mix-ins to create your ideal drink.

      8. Catch up with a friend during walks
