I prefer to board a flight as if I'm embarking on a camping trip. I'm ready for any situation, with everything I need for survival neatly arranged. You won't find me running out of snacks or realizing mid-flight that I've left my headphones behind. I've perfected my personal item packing method to ensure smooth navigation through airports and a more enjoyable experience during long flights. From travel-friendly toiletries to useful gadgets for in-flight entertainment, I've determined what deserves a valuable spot in that under-the-seat space.

1. Tote bag insert
I bought this tote bag insert a few years back after discovering it in an article on The Everygirl (my colleagues are the best influencers) and have used it on every trip since. It has completely transformed how I organize my personal item, making it ten times more orderly. With its numerous pockets, all those little essentials (like lip balm, hand sanitizer, and my passport) have their own spot and are easy to reach. No more blindly searching through the bottom of my tote bag when I need something.
2. Water bottle
What’s the first thing I do after passing through security? Fill my water bottle. The dry air in airplane cabins makes hydration more challenging than usual. I always carry my Owala because it holds a decent amount of water while being compact enough to easily fit into my personal item. Plus, the leak-proof lid means I don’t have to worry about spills ruining my travel day.
3. Passport holder
Having your passport easily accessible during international travel is essential, but I would never just toss mine into my bag without protection. I always keep my passport safe in a leather holder, making it simpler to find in my personal item and safeguarding it from spills. I also store all my cards and cash in my passport holder, allowing it to function as my wallet when I arrive at my destination (one less item to pack!). I appreciate that this holder has a button closure, various slots for credit cards, and a zip pocket for coins (particularly useful in Europe!). Additionally, it features RFID-blocking technology, safeguarding your information from potential scanning.
4. Noise-cancelling headphones
Even if you’re not seated next to a crying baby or a talkative passenger, planes can be noisy. I constantly wear these over-ear headphones during flights, even if I’m not actively listening to anything. The noise-cancelling feature reduces engine noise (and the chatter of fellow travelers), making me feel much calmer and more relaxed in the air. Moreover, headphones signify “do not disturb,” which is why they earn a must-pack position in my personal item.
5. Medications
It goes without saying that you should bring your necessary medications when traveling, but I advise against stowing them in your carry-on. Having experienced being separated from my luggage multiple times, I know medications should be as close to me as possible. I always keep a pill container with my daily vitamins and medications—along with emergency supplies like pain relievers and antacids—in my personal item. This way, I can maintain my usual dosage schedule even when flying and avoid anxiety if my luggage doesn’t arrive at my destination.
6. Hand sanitizer
Airplanes are filled with germs, so hand sanitizer is essential. I love this Touchland option because it’s gentle on my skin (those with sensitive skin understand the struggle) and has a light, calming scent. Its bottle shape also fits conveniently into a pocket in my personal item without adding bulk.
7. Bluetooth audio transmitter
Unfortunately, seatback screens aren’t available on all flights, but if mine has one, I pull out this useful gadget. It connects to the headphone jack and lets you sync to your preferred headphones via Bluetooth, eliminating the need for the cheap, uncomfortable earbuds provided by flight attendants if you want to watch an in-flight movie.
8. Kindle
I have been known to read an entire book on a single flight, so bringing enough reading material for a whole trip would be challenging without my Kindle. I can download as many books as I wish and read without needing in-flight Wi-Fi. I also enjoy that I don’t have to turn on the overhead light for reading during an overnight flight. Plus, it’s much slimmer than the typical books I read, making it easier to pack in a tote bag.
9. Portable charger
There's nothing worse than boarding a flight with a dangerously low phone battery only to discover there are no USB outlets available. For long travel days and frequent uses of the airline app and Google Maps, I
