I like to approach flying as if I'm gearing up for a camping trip. I prepare for every conceivable situation, with all necessary items for survival conveniently organized. You'll never find me running low on snacks or realizing mid-flight that I forgot my headphones. I've perfected my personal item packing strategy, making airport navigation and long flights much smoother. From travel-friendly toiletries to useful gadgets for in-flight entertainment, I’ve identified what deserves a special spot in that under-the-seat area.

If you're unsure about what to include in your personal item, I’d be happy to share what I always carry for a hassle-free flight.

      1. Tote Bag Insert

I bought this tote bag insert years ago after discovering it in an article on The Everygirl (co-workers make great influencers), and I've used it for every trip since. It completely transformed how I organize my personal item, making everything ten times more systematic. With its many pockets, all my small essentials (like lip balm, hand sanitizer, and passport) have their own designated space, making them easy to find. No more digging around the bottom of my tote bag when I need something.

      2. Water Bottle

As soon as I clear security, my first priority is to fill up my water bottle. Staying hydrated is a greater challenge than usual due to the dry air in airplane cabins. I always bring my Owala because it holds a good amount of water while being compact enough to fit in my personal item easily. Plus, the leak-proof lid ensures I don’t have to worry about spills spoiling my travel day.

      3. Passport Holder

Having your passport easily accessible when traveling internationally is essential, but I never simply toss mine into my bag unprotected. I keep my passport safely in a leather holder, making it easier to find in my personal item while also protecting it from spills. I store all my cards and cash in this holder, allowing it to double as my wallet once I arrive (one less item to pack!). I appreciate that this one features a button closure, various slots for credit cards, and a zippered pocket for coins (particularly useful in Europe!). Additionally, it offers RFID-blocking technology to protect your information from scammers.

      4. Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Even without crying babies or overly chatty passengers nearby, planes can be quite noisy. I wear these over-ear headphones throughout the flight, even if I’m not listening to anything. The noise-cancelling feature reduces engine noise (and disturbances from other travelers), helping me feel calmer and more relaxed in the air. Plus, headphones are a universal signal for “do not disturb,” which makes them a must-pack item.

      5. Medications

It's obvious to bring your necessary medications while traveling, but I advise against storing them in your checked luggage. After having my luggage lost enough times, I know medications should be as close to me as possible. I keep a pill container with my daily vitamins and medications, plus any emergency meds like pain relievers and Tums, in my personal item. This way, I can maintain my usual dosage schedule in the air and avoid panic if my luggage doesn’t arrive at my destination.

      6. Hand Sanitizer

Planes are notorious for germs, so hand sanitizer is essential. I prefer this Touchland option because it’s gentle on my skin (sensitive skin types understand the struggle) and has a light fragrance. The bottle’s design allows it to fit neatly into a pocket in my personal item without adding extra bulk.

      7. Bluetooth Audio Transmitter

Not all planes offer seatback screens, but if mine has one, I'll bring this nifty gadget. It plugs into the headphone jack, allowing me to connect my Bluetooth headphones, so I don’t have to rely on the cheap, uncomfortable earbuds that flight attendants distribute if I want to watch a movie.

      8. Kindle

I can easily finish a book on a flight, so it's impossible to pack enough reading material for an entire trip without my Kindle. I can download any number of books and read to my heart’s content without needing in-flight Wi-Fi. I also appreciate that I can read without needing to turn on the overhead light on overnight flights. Being significantly slimmer than the physical books I usually carry, it fits conveniently in my tote bag.

      9. Portable Charger

There's nothing worse than boarding a flight with a nearly dead phone battery, only to find there’s no USB outlet available. For extended travel days and frequent use of my airline app and Google Maps, a full battery and a portable charger are vital. This charger is especially convenient since it has built-in cables that connect directly to my device, eliminating the need
