I embarked on an exploration of Banana Republic's archives alongside its newest collaboration—these items are quite…
Although it is favored by editors for office wear, Banana Republic's history goes well beyond its stylish suits. Its original clothing—better described as gear—was designed for travel and outdoor activities. Influenced by recent trends like gorpcore and the vintage revival, Banana Republic has turned to its archives to reintroduce styles as modern interpretations in a collection aptly titled The Archive Reissue. This collection is a partnership with The Explorers Club. While the organization may not be known to everyone, its members include notable figures such as Theodore Roosevelt. With branches worldwide, The Explorers Club has brought together some of the most prominent researchers in pursuit of scientific exploration and discoveries since 1904. In teaming up with the club, Banana Republic aims to be the outfit for great adventures. "This Archive Reissue collection showcases Banana Republic's rich design legacy through a modern perspective. By linking our heritage with The Explorers Club's exploration ethos, we've created a collection that honors adventure, craftsmanship, and timeless style. Every piece reflects the brand's design principles while embodying a contemporary spirit of curiosity and exploration," remarked Max Cohen, Banana Republic's senior archive specialist.
The J.Crew x Lee collaboration indicated that the men's section deserves equal recognition, and the Banana Republic Archive Reissue follows this trend. This 20-piece collection is primarily gender-neutral, as curiosity and adventure transcend boundaries. The oversized, textured jackets and vests can be styled with a belt or a midi skirt (notably the Khaki Midi Skirt) for looks that are fitting for both fieldwork and the office.
The collection vividly displays Banana Republic’s heritage of travel and tactile clothing. It even casts retro technology in a fresh perspective, with items like the Packable Jacket serving as an example. This lightweight and sturdy nylon-cotton-linen rain jacket conveniently folds into a tote without sacrificing style for practicality. Another highlight is the Trekking Jumpsuit, made from robust cotton fabric, making it ideal for hikes or running errands. To be honest, my errand days likely rack up as many steps as a hike. Pair it with the Oversized Duffle Bag, and you’re ready for anything. With so many standout pieces, it's hard to choose just one. However, I’ll highlight a few favorites: the Pullover Crew-Neck Sweater is a classic fisherman's choice; the Fireman's Jacket, featuring frog clasps and a vibrant yellow color, is sure to attract attention; and the Photojournalist Vest, described in a quote from Banana Republic's 1988 catalog as "Numerous photographers have told us they can't carry on without this vest; we'll wager you'll carry on a bit yourself once you've tried it," is sure to delight fans of archive fashion.
The campaign features actor Joshua Jackson, photographed at The Explorers Club's headquarters in Manhattan, New York. The images from the campaign showcase artifacts and antiques from the club’s private collection. I had the chance to tour the clubhouse and appreciate these items up close. On a side note: if you find yourself on the Upper East Side, I highly recommend attending one of the club's public events. It’s definitely worth it. In the meantime, explore the Archive Reissue collection below. You’ll find all the mentioned pieces and more stylish new arrivals, along with a sense of curiosity about what else lies within the Banana Republic archive that’s yet to be re-released.
