I Rarely Wear Color, But This Surprising Combination Is Making Me Abandon Neutrals.
Kristina Ang serves as a Who What Wear editor in residence, a fashion writer and content creator, and a social producer for Spotify. Previously, she held the position of social video coordinator at Harper's Bazaar. For a long time, I didn't lean towards wearing color. I maintained a predominantly neutral wardrobe, finding it the easiest to put together—black, brown, white, and the occasional navy were my staples. However, I've recently felt weary of the dark hues in my closet. A noticeable revival of color in both street fashion and runway shows has rendered colors like red and green as neutrals, and with the fashion industry embracing more vibrant runway palettes, I've started experimenting with color combinations that would have been out of my reach just a few years ago.

Designers continually return to this bright duo as a staple pop of color in their collections. We saw this prevalent in the spring/summer 2026 collections last September, from Silvia Venturini Fendi's final collection as creative director of Fendi to Matthieu Blazy's debut collection at Chanel. Louis Vuitton provided an intriguing example: a striking pink dress subtly matched with delicate red socks. There's something about the combination of these two colors that feels both classic and fresh simultaneously. Just when I thought pink and red were the pinnacle of color combinations, I noticed another pairing: red and purple. As a dedicated purple enthusiast, anything that pairs with it piques my interest, though I wasn't initially excited about this color duo. It wasn’t until I tried it in a two-piece from Fancì Club that I realized what I had been missing. The top featured a purple corset bodice with an attached red lace bra, and the bottom was a full sheer slip that could be worn folded down. What I love about Fancì Club is their ability to make women feel sexy and confident, and that’s exactly how I felt flaunting this set on a Friday night.
I made an effort to track down this set from my favorite clothing rental service, Hauteline. Fortunately, founder Kristie Chow happened to be at the store and informed me that while it wasn't available at that moment, it could be delivered just in time for an upcoming event on my schedule. I was thrilled. Naturally, I wore it that night and was met with a flood of compliments.

Interestingly, at first glance, one might not think red and purple would complement each other. However, like pink, purple is analogous to red on the color wheel. They sit next to each other and create a harmonious and warm mix. Moreover, blending red and purple yields colors like burgundy and maroon, two shades that have become well-admired in the industry.

Prada fully committed to the pairing for spring/summer 2026, styling a red polo shirt with purple micro shorts. The bold black accessories, such as the bag and shoes, really completed the look. Kudos to Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons. We must also mention the various shades of red and purple presented at Miu Miu, which showcased both bright and dark variations of the red-and-purple trend. I particularly enjoyed seeing an orange bag styled within this color combo. This raises the question: Could red, purple, and orange become the next defining color combination? Only time will tell.
