There was a period when I was completely dedicated to the notion that fragrances should be understated. As a beauty editor, I have the opportunity to sample many of the finest perfumes, and over the past few years, I’ve realized that my collection has been increasingly populated with gentle skin scents, comforting musks, and subtle mists that linger close to the body, only becoming noticeable when someone is nearby. Perhaps this change coincided with becoming a mother, where it seemed easier and safer to blend in rather than be conspicuous. Additionally, I was never fond of how strong perfumes clung to my children's clothes and skin, overpowering that delightful baby scent. My children are now more independent, and as they gain autonomy, I’ve been wishing to reconnect with my own sense of self. “Currently, you often find a strong foundation of sandalwood, cedar, cashmeran, and tonka bean, which provide structure and a luxurious feel to modern power fragrances,” Saint-Ford explains. “But what truly defines it is the equilibrium. There’s warmth paired with freshness, and familiarity mixed with something slightly unconventional. That contrast is what gives presence today.”
