Sara Walker is an editor in residence at Who What Wear, as well as a content creator, stylist, and fashion consultant based in Los Angeles. After traveling more than 20 times a year, I've mastered my airport outfit. I've tried everything—overdressed, underdressed, cold, uncomfortable—and along the way, I've discovered what truly works. It's the outfit I instinctively choose every time. I've fully committed to my airport ensemble to the extent that I don’t even think about it anymore, but I think it's worthwhile to break it down. I alternate between vintage jeans, leggings, and black pants, but the essentials remain the same: a lightweight trench, a white or black tee, and a V-neck sweater layer. My philosophy is straightforward: I want to be comfortable while still looking elevated. I do my best to avoid leggings when possible; however, there are moments when they're just necessary.

If I opt for leggings, I fully embrace it. I tuck them into knee-high riding boots (which also keeps me from needing to pack those), add a chunky sweater, and layer on a trench. This combination feels easy and polished, giving the impression that I'm dressed up while essentially wearing loungewear.

Black pants are my go-to choice. My favorite Leset pants are technically sweatpants but appear as tailored black trousers. I also adore wide-leg satin versions from The Row, La Ligne, Éterne, or Enza Costa. It's the simplest way to look put-together with minimal effort.

I know that wearing jeans at the airport can be controversial, but I find them completely manageable—even for long flights—as long as they're the right fit. They should be worn-in, vintage-style, and slightly loose. I avoid tight, high-waisted jeans that dig in or ride up. Comfort is key, like in vintage Levi’s.

For tops, I consistently choose a simple tee (from Leset, Éterne, or Sold Out NYC), always layered with a sweater. I need a sweater with me or in my bag, and the trench coat is essential. It’s the ideal lightweight, stylish layer for any destination. A new addition to my airport outfit is a cashmere wrap. It serves as a chic throw-over for the trench, an airplane blanket, or a pillow—truly the perfect extra.

Regarding footwear, if I’m wearing leggings, riding boots are a must. With wide-leg trousers (especially the Leset ones), I usually opt for Salomons or Asics. They’re comfortable, practical, and double as my workout shoes, saving space in my bag. When I wear jeans, I prefer ballet flats, flat ankle boots, or loafers—something easy yet refined.

The most crucial component of my airport outfit is the tote bag. It needs to meet all requirements—stylish, functional, and spacious enough to hold everything. I carry a lot, requiring a bag that fits my laptop, snacks, beauty products, a sweater, and more. My favorites include The Row Margaux, a Longchamp (I appreciate the zipper for travel), the L.L.Bean Boat bag, and my Staud tote. All of these strike the right balance between practicality and chicness, which is essential.

Occasionally, I finish off my look with a baseball hat. My favorites come from '47.

Ultimately, my airport outfit strategy revolves around alleviating stress. I never want to be the person who overanalyzes what to wear for hours of sitting. I aim to feel like myself, just a bit more intentional. If I can transition directly from the plane to a lunch or meeting looking good, I know I’ve nailed it. Comfortable, layered, and a touch polished—this is always my objective. Although I don’t have a strict, all-encompassing uniform, this is one area where I repeat outfits without hesitation, and for good reason.
