Laura Harrier discusses her signature fragrance, Nina Park Glam, and shares her pre-event playlist for the Michael premiere.
Welcome to Beauty's Night Out, a series focused on essential beauty discussions influencing the nightlife scene. Expect an exclusive preview of the newest trends, behind-the-scenes tutorials, and plenty of inspiration for your going-out looks—all you need is your favorite playlist. This edition features a night out with Laura Harrier, who is an actress, model, and the U.S. ambassador for YSL Beauty. In a red carpet interview, entertainment industry icon Suzanne de Passe shares the moment she realized Harrier was meant to portray her in "Michael," the biopic about Michael Jackson that premiered on April 24. "I saw her sitting across [from me], and she reminded me of me," she tells Entertainment Tonight. "It wasn't intellectual. It was energetic." While I can't claim to have de Passe's talent for spotting potential (she discovered the Jackson 5 in 1968 and was crucial in shaping Diana Ross's solo career in the 1970s), I can attest that Harrier's energy is magnetic—even nearly 3,000 miles away over Zoom.
Harrier is friendly and humorous right from the start as we talk about the getting-ready process, which includes a plate of chicken tenders ("My go-to glam order," she shares) accompanied by a glass of champagne. "I love having a girl team. It often works out like that with my glam. We play music, share stories, and laugh… It’s always such a fun vibe," she explains. As we discuss her day leading up to the film's L.A. premiere, her beauty essentials, and her funniest going-out memory (a spoiler: it involves a small bag and a man jumping into the pool for her), I can't help but feel like I'd fit right in. Keep reading, and you will also feel part of Harrier's close-knit circle.
Since the theater was nearby, Harrier had her friends over to get ready—celebrity makeup artist Nina Park and hairstylist Irinel de León, who also took on the role of DJ. "She was playing a lot of fun Afrobeats, which I really love. Burna Boy, Wizkid, things like that," Harrier mentions. A session with Nina Park is my ultimate dream as a beauty editor, so naturally, I had to ask all my pressing makeup questions. What inspired the look? Were there any references they liked? What was Park's technique? "With Nina, we hardly ever use references, as odd as that sounds," Harrier admits. "Sometimes before a big event, she'll sketch a face chart of the look she wants to achieve. She literally paints my face on pieces of paper. We discuss it more rather than focusing on a specific reference of someone else's work." This approach makes sense, considering Park's signature style has become an ultimate reference point, driving a trend of natural, glowy complexions and soft, cool-toned lips.
For the Michael premiere, Park took inspiration directly from Harrier's everyday glam. "She was looking at a photo from my fitting with my stylist, Danielle Goldberg, and said, 'I love this lip you had on. What makeup were you wearing?'" Harrier recalls. "She takes these really natural moments and enhances them, which I think highlights her talent. She makes you look like the best version of yourself, but it never feels heavy or costume-like." The lip color in question was a sculpted, brown-toned gloss featuring YSL's Kiss Shaper Lip Liner in Cocoa Flirt and Loveshine Lip Oil Stick in Melted Honey, which Harrier made sure to pack before heading to the premiere. "I always take my lip stuff with me," she adds, mentioning her love for the brand's Candy Glaze Lip Gloss in every shade. Additionally, she makes sure to include a setting powder—YSL's All Hours Hyper Blur Loose Setting Powder—"just in case I get shiny on the carpet," along with a disposable spoolie to fluff her brows.
She doesn't carry a travel-size fragrance with her regularly ("I'm always amazed by those people," she jokes), but she does generously spray Coqui Coqui's Coco Coco Eau de Parfum before leaving. "I visited their shop when I was in the Yucatán, this quaint little town outside of Merida," she shares. "I soak myself before I leave home [and] let it settle throughout the day." This technique is smart for maintaining fragrance, considering Harrier can't fit much else in her beloved mini bags—not even a one-milliliter sample. "I didn't take any photos in it, but at the premiere, I carried this tiny vintage gold mesh bag that felt fitting for Michael. It was sparkly and gold," she tells me. Her typical choice, Saint Laurent's Mini Le 5 à 7, is just as small. "I really love a tiny bag, to the point where my phone never fits," she
