The Art of Airport Style: A Veteran Editor Shares Why She Continues to Dress Up for Air Travel—and Tips on How to Achieve It

Chrissy Rutherford serves as the Editor in Residence for Who What Wear UK and is a fashion editor, writer, podcaster, content creator, and mental health advocate dedicated to encouraging open discussions about wellbeing in today’s digital landscape. After spending 15 years in the fashion media industry, she now leverages her platform along with FWD, a personal development newsletter, to destigmatize mental health issues, share her own experiences, and promote vulnerability as a meaningful way to connect with others. While some may find it a bit controversial, I firmly believe in the importance of dressing up for air travel. The overall experience can challenge our sense of dignity, and looking good—without completely sacrificing comfort—is one way I can feel somewhat civilized.

My perspective on this has been greatly influenced by my dad. He has shaped my style in numerous ways, but one of my strongest childhood memories is realizing that he always dressed better for trips back home to Jamaica compared to regular workdays. He would wear tailored trousers, a sharp shirt, and polished shoes. My dad takes pride in his appearance, which has certainly influenced me. Even though air travel has become more casual, he continually reminds me that I don’t have to forfeit my personal style just because others do. I also like to keep in mind that you never know who you might encounter on a plane.

In addition to my father, the supermodels of the '90s have long served as major style inspirations for me. While I admire their glamorous moments, it's their off-duty looks, including old paparazzi photographs at airports, that truly inspire me. They always appeared effortlessly stylish and put-together, whether it was Tyra Banks in leggings paired with a cropped Calvin Klein tee and a boxy denim jacket, Kate Moss in all-black attire, or Linda Evangelista layering a simple black slip dress over a t-shirt (that’s one I need to try). None of them ever looked like they had just rolled out of bed to catch a flight.

Airport arrival photos remain a significant opportunity for models and celebrities, as well as for brands looking for exposure. Margot Robbie recently went viral for her laid-back look featuring slouchy basketball shorts and a coordinated long-sleeve tee paired with mesh Alaia flats, which is bound to inspire future summer getaways globally. With the Cannes Film Festival rapidly approaching, one could argue that the arrivals at Nice Airport are just as noteworthy as the walks down the red carpet.

      **My Travel Day Go-To Formula:**

      1. Loose trousers are a more comfortable choice than jeans but present a more put-together look than sweats or pajamas.

      2. Stick to a neutral color palette, such as black, navy, grey, or brown. Monochrome outfits also appear more refined, though I might wear white if I’m heading on vacation.

      3. Choose shoes that take up the most space in your luggage. In summer, I may opt for open-toed sandals, but flip-flops are best reserved for the beach as they can be noisy during a long trek to the gate.

      4. Always bring a cashmere scarf or an extra sweater to throw around my neck if I feel chilly.

      5. Outerwear is essential since it’s usually the first thing people notice. A stylish trench or leather jacket can tie an outfit together.

Although I might not encounter paparazzi at the end of the jet bridge, I still appreciate stepping off the plane looking as if there could be.

      **1. Easy-Breezy Trouser Style**

Look for trousers with a relaxed fit that are also wrinkle-resistant. A pair of black trousers can make you appear organized without too much effort. Currently, I’m fond of ME + EM's Tapered Pant, but elasticated waist options like Aligne’s barrel leg trousers are also excellent.

      **2. Smart Layering is Essential**

I often combine my trousers with Intimissimi’s modal x cashmere shirts due to their thin and soft texture. They layer easily, and the boat neck design adds an elegant touch. I typically add a cashmere or wool knit from Guest in Residence, & Daughter, or M&S. Staying warm is crucial, so having quality layers is indispensable.

      **3. Maximize Your Shoe-Drobe**

My choice of footwear usually depends on my destination and packing. I tend to wear my heaviest pair or the shoes that take up more space, like lug-sole loafers or ankle boots. However, ballet flats are always a convenient option (I also pack cashmere socks in case my feet get cold on the plane).

**4. Dress for the Holiday You Desire**

When traveling to a warm location, I love wearing coordinating sets for a mix of comfort and sophistication. Alternatively, if I want a sportier look, cashmere track pants are great for walking, paired with either a blazer or a leather jacket for an elevated feel.

      **5. Chic Yet Practical Baggage**

I appreciate the efficiency of traveling
